Great and not so great...
After much trying I fired up the engine for the first time today. After purging all the lines, I attempted a start. It took many tries to get the engine fired up, but it finally ran. Once it ran, it ran great...until I tried to test the P-Mags by individually cycling their breakers. The engine stumbled hard when I switched the right breaker to the off position, but recovered when I switched it back on. I THINK this indicates that it was not generating it's own power. When I switched off the left P-Mag, the engine monitor showed an 800 RPM increase, but that was bogus because you could not hear any change at all in the engine. As called out in the manual, only one ignition is wired to the ACS2000. All temps were even on CHT/EGT. While the engine was running, I tested both radios, as the engine monitor showed 13.7V. After I shut down, both ICOM A-200's went blank. All other avionics and electronics work fine. No fuses popped, no burned wires.

I guess it's back to the drawing board and YES, I'm more than a little depressed about it. I'll call the Emagair boys this week to see what ideas they have. The P-Mags were installed by the engine builder, and I have not addressed the issue of their timing...but it is disheartening to see that they are apparently not making their own power.

I'll keep the group informed as I stumble through this...

Bob

Very interesting info as I too am going the p-mag route. I have no idea as
to the problem but look forward to your solution.

As a side note I am about to start the dreaded canopy (tip up). Any advice
out there. At least say a little prayer for .................

Pmags will not self-power below about 900 rpm. Also, there is a chance that your Pmag/engine monitor combo will read 2x actual rpm in self-powered mode; mine does this and I hope to make it go away by resetting the mag to another dipswitch seting and reprogramming my GRT engine monitor to expect twice the # of pulses. I bet they have addressed this on their latest model. The tribulations of being an early-adopter Wink

Wait till you experience the in-flight stumble that the heavier-gauge B+ wire is supposed to fix (or new firmware; your choice Wink
