All;
I am going to need a new nosewheel soon and was wondering which tire is recommended. I currently have a MCREARY AIRTRAC 5.00-5 4ply tire and will be going to a 6ply tire. I have been looking at the Michelin and the Goodyears but am not sure they are worth the extra cost over the MCREARY.
What do you think?

Galin,
When I received my kit and saw the McReary tires I immediately sold them on ebay and bought Goodyears. The quality difference is readily apparent and it will last longer than a McReary tire.

Hello Galin, Some perspective:
If you have a nose tire failure and the resulting loss of directional contro
puts you off the side of the runway with a broken prop and a sudden engine
stoppage the difference in price between a low quality tire and a high
quality tire will seem a trivial amount.
If you take the difference in price between a low quality tire and a high
quality tire and divide that amount by the number of landings and takeoffs
that you will make during the life of the high quality tire the difference
in cost per landing and takeoff will seem a trivial amount.
If you take the difference in price between a low quality tire and a high
quality tire and divide that amount by the number of days of use you will
have during the life of the high quality tire the difference in cost per day
will seem a trivial amount.

understand knowledge."

I agree that if one tire is more reliable then it could be the better choice even if it is more expensive. But why is one a "low quality" and the other a "high quality" tire? Are you basing this statement on price or do you have actual information that one is low quality and the other is high quality? Or is there any difference in reliability or life?
In my world a low price Toyota has higher reliability and longer life than a high price Jaguar or Maserati.
Another school of thought is to just replace the tire more often and for the same total cost the less expensive tire will allow more frequent replacements and maybe this will give more safety.

I bought Goodyear (next to top of line) for the mains, and Goodyear
(top of the line) for the nose wheel, thinking that the nose wheel
would be the most catastrophic failure if you factor in a possible
prop strike requiring an engine teardown. Not to mention loss of
steering. If you want to cheap it out go with McRearys for the mains
and the best tire you can buy for the nose wheel.

I base my comments on the use of Goodyear tires and Airtracs on my airplane.
Besides, Goodyear let me fly their blimp.
