I had to remove my oil reservoir recently for some maintenance so now I have to do an oil purge. I've been reading the oil purge procedures. They seem rather involved. Pressurizing the system, removing all the valve covers, checking valve clearances... What a pain. Anything else I should look out for that is not mentioned in the manual?

You need to do it or risk damaging the lifters and dry spots on rod ends. It really isn't that bad to do.

Luis,
It is a pain that's for sure but after you do it a few times it gets easier (like carb syncing) I have had to purge my system several times. Have never had a problem with air in my lifters so far but I guess it can happen. In the Lockwood course Dean (my instructor) said to put a hammer against your chest and lean your body heavily against the lifter arm with the handle of the hammer on the arm where it meets the lifter rods.(hammer head on your chest) This should compress the hydraulic lifters enough so that if there is any air in them it should compress enough to show up in excessive tappet clearances.
Just follow the Rotax instructions and it will lead you thru the procedure.

The inspection for correct venting or priming of the hydraulic tappets says to warm up the engine, take off valve covers then press on rocker arms. I have a motor that had been tore down and reassembled by someone else and sat around for awhile. I have purged the oil system but not checked the tappets and was wondering if checking of the hydraulic valve tappets cold will give me any indication and / or push any air out.

Luis,

I just reviewed the Service Letter and the procedure outlined is for new
engine installation and "reworked engines". After an oil change, I would
follow the first step and pressurize the tank and rotate through until I
found clean new oil in the return line into the take up bottle. The valve
covers off? I think that would come under the new or reworked engine where
all oil has been drained off. I doubt you could drain all oil from the
engine by simply disconnecting the oil tank, unless you removed all hoses
and let is sit that way for a day or two. Just my take on it, but I think
the lifter check would be advisable if you were checking a new engine or one
that had extensive work on the engine.

And this is just my opinion, but if it was my engine, I would purge with the
air into the tank , Run the engine to check pressures etc. and then go fly.

Lowell

As per Rotax, any time the oil circuit has been opened you are supposed to do a purge. If all you do is take out the oil drain plug and take the filter off in your normal oil change and open nothing else then you don't need to do a purge. This is why A&P's should have a Rotax class because I have seen many times an A&P thinks he is going to get more oil out of the system by rotating the prop or taking off the oil cooler lines to drain more oil and never does a purge. Once the oil drain is open or the filter off do not rotate the prop to get more oil out unless you just feel like you want to do an oil purge just for the fun of it. The other big thing I see A&P's do is put anti seize on the plugs. Heat conducting paste only for the 912/914 and dry threads on 582's.
