How many people are flying with Sam James Cowls?
Is everyone happy?

Are they lighter than stock?
Are they faster than stock?
Do they cool enough?

Thanks,

A friend converted his RV-7A from Van's standard cowl to the Sam James cowl in hopes of improving his cooling issues. Frankly he noticed no difference in cooling and about a 2-3 knot gain in speed. So whether it was worth the effort is open to question.

Norm
I am replying directly to you rather than the list, because I do not have
time to reply to dozens of email query's.
I have over 1000 hours with my James Cowl. I find that as a general
statement it is 1 to 5 lbs heavier than the stock Vans cowl. (I have both)
They are on average 5 to 10 knots faster and they cool better. Actually, I
have found that in the winter time (wisconsin) they over cool with the 4 3/4
inch inlet rings supplied. I remedied that by designing and making
rings with a smaller inlet diameter (4 inch) for winter time use. I also
made a set of 3 1/2 inch opening for operations below zere temps.
You may call me any time CST (at) 920 619 6968 (cell phone -let phone ring).
Do not reply by Email, I only look at it occassionly .

I have flown with the Sam James cowl and plenum on my RV7A since new. Now
250 hours. Obviously I have no way to compare to "stock" Vans cowls,
however based on general discussions with other RVers I don't think my plane
is any faster nor does it run any cooler than stock. Still, I'm pleased as
I think the S.J. cowls look way cooler!

I converted to a sam James cowl and plenum chamber after approx. 500 hours
with the Vans cowl. The james cowl cools better, and my airspeed increased
an average of 10 knots. The down side is that you will need a propeller
with a 2 inch extended hub.
I do not have time to discuss this on the internet. I will be happy to talk
to any of you via telephone. anytime. Call 920 619 6968.
