Hello Kevin,
Well, is used by pilots here forever... a must for the AG pilots... This is the chamoise that is made from deer skin (?), works like those new micromesh black funnels, make a test.
In a funnel atach a chamoise loose inside so the gasoline will not spill, see how easy will pass trough. then test with a quart of the same gasoline and add a little amount of water and debris... You can see how the water and debris will stay in the chamois side of the funnel, nothing on the fuel.
Here we have a big old galvanized funnel with a chamois rag, can easy hold about 4 galons of gas. In our aerodrome we dont have gas, so we bring our own, all goes though the funnel before going to the tank...
For xcountries we take a little black one (about 1 or 2 quarts capacity) that I brought from a vacation trip (visited Aircraft Spruce in Corona but is slower and the fuel cans are heavy...

while lining a funnel, will filter out water and debris. When I was a float pilot, we had to "jug" fuel down to the lake from our tank on the strip. We always ran the fuel through a chamois.
It's been a long time, but I recall being told that if water was filtered out, it should be removed from the chamois quickly as it would slowly soak into the chamois, wetting a spot which then provided a channel for water to wick through thus defeating the water filtering ability of the chamois.
I never had any real water problem in my fuel so maybe others (Gary?) could comment, agree, disagree, or clarify that this is something one would watch while using a chamois.
I still have a chamois and the same old funnel in the hanger. Our airport fueling operation is very clean, but if we have to drain a tank into jugs, it goes through the chamois when going back in. I keep the chamois rolled up and stored in a screw top jar (instant coffee type) to keep it clean when not in use.

Hello Randy,
Sure I remember that only once in a fligh to the coast, when I made my preflight in the morning for take off, I found a big drop of water in the fuel sampler, I think was from condensation.
I have found sometimes a little water and some debris in the chamois, from the gas station or maybe from the jug, but then we wash and dry the chamois once we finish the fill up.
We were told always to do that (never leave the chamois dirty or with water), but didnt know why until now that I read your post. Thank for the explanation.
