Has anyone got an opinion on the Kiev prop on a 912UL in a Kitfox 4 ? I have seen several Highlanders that use this prop and they all seem happy with them. It is a beautifully made piece of art, that's for sure. I talked to the importer yesterday and he said I would gain a few mph in cruise and be able to slow the idle rpm down to around 1400 rpm on approach thus reducing my ground roll (kind of acts like a speed brake) The later would certainly be useful as I have had some problems getting the rpm low enough on approach with my Warp.
I am just tossing this around in my head and would appreciate any opinions.

Hey Dick,
I've got a Kiev 183 and spinner for my HKS but it hasn't flown yet. As
you say, they are beautifully made.
I got this prop because it met the inertia requirements of the gearbox
and it has good performance in a Skyranger with the same engine/gearbox.

Add speed in cruise? Not sure about that. The Highlander and Skyranger
aren't as fast as a Kitfox. The prop is very light so maybe you can
slow down the idle.
If you really want speed brakes: doesn't a slipper clutch disengage when
the engine gets below some rpm? If so, wouldn't the prop free-wheel to
some rpm based on the airspeed? If true that will create tremendous
drag. That is what happens in a Rotax C gearbox with a clutch
installed. That's why I never wanted one. What would happen to the
engine-out glide ratio?
BTW, what is the lead time now on Kiev props and blades?
Cheers,
Mark Napier

Mark,
I should have restated my question a little better. The real reason I am considering the Kiev is, I guess, is that it is beautiful. It looks like a prop should look sleek, smooth, polished, semi scimitar The first time I saw one I said "wooohh,I like this....alot!
If course looks aren't everything but usually if it looks good it should fly good. Anyway my first three landings in my Kitfox after I bought the airplane were deadstick. The former owner had the idle set too low. I assure you the prop stops RIGHT NOW and won't freewheel. It's too light with little to no inertia.
I now have the flight idle set about right .(1600-1800) It took a lot of fiddling to get it there and I really wouldn't bring it back to 1400 as that is too low.
I don't know how backed up Kiev is on delivery as I am still in the thought stage. As stated earlier, my Warp is fine but that Kiev sure makes me salivate!
