Let me tell a first hand experience:
About 3 or 4 years ago (?) I changed a broken axle to a old 701 STOL, this was a Chez built kit, this kit still had the wings and header tank system. but new style main gear, cant remember the year built but I checked the great workmanship... Was bought used by this last owner.
The axle broke in a hard landing in kind of (cant remember the spelling) rough (?) landing strip. The axle just broke at the reinfrocement.
Because of the time it takes to ship parts from USA to here (shiping and customs paperwork, etc) we were able to "lend" him our kit's axles we were not needing at that moment yet, mean time the new ones ordered arrived.
They did arrived from Zenith and went though all Customs well in advance that were needed.
I had the chance to compare the axles we had with the broken one, also with the spare ones recieved... Sincerely the new style (we had and new ones) had about the double of material compared with the old style. So I think Marco already made their homework, I trust the axles.
Never heard (or know about) Matco aluminum rims failure... We are very happy with our 701 (280 hrs of fun flying and counting) and with ZAC service of course.

Page 15 of the Nov-Dec 2009 Zenair News says that old style Matco wheels can fail without warning. I am not sure when Zenith went to the new wheels. They show a wheel with the rim fractured around the bolt circle, looks scary. They do not say what the wheel was on or the weight of the airplane. To replace the wheels is about $208, plus shipping I would guess.
Has anyone on this list seen this failure on a 701?
(A few years ago Matco recalled the main gear axles, at least one axle did failure on a 701.)
