Can anyone tell me what size rivet sets to order for the 601upgrade? I need to know so I can order some from acs to practice on. I have ordered my upgrade kit but as a non AMD and non flying C I think it will be awhile before I get my kit.
Also C I am opening my engine box tomorrow and would like some suggestions on mounting the engine.
1. The upgrade will take a while so mount engine and support airplane on tail C landing gear and raise engine on lift to remove center spar?
2. The upgrade kit will come soon so wait till the upgrade is done before putting on engine.
I have tried to called Mexico but can never seem to get through.

Don
I think that ones you absolutely need are 3/16 and 5/32 universal head
(AN470) sets and, of course, a bucking bar and a 3X or so rivet gun. I also
bought a 1/8" universal head set so that I could sub 1/8" solid rivets for
the Avex rivets in places where I'd like a bit of extra strength. (Note
that this substitution was blessed by CH many years ago in a Zenair News
article.) I found a Bingellis article with some useful info:
http://www.oshkosh365.org/saarchive/eaa_articles/1993_05_11.pdf
Bingellis recommends a 5 lb bucking bar for the 3/16 rivets. I haven't seen
any that heavy, and I was thinking of using a sledge hammer instead.
I haven't seen an upgrade tool list published. With Christmas around the
corner, that's too bad. It's always nice getting useful tools for
Christmas. It looks to me that in addition to the riveting tools, we'll
also need long reach clecos in 3/16 and 5/32. I also ordered a rivet
removal tool that is basically a drill guide. Hopefully it will reduce the
chances of damaging the rivet holes in the spar. Brown Tool sells the rivet
removal tool and they also have some surplus long reach clecos, rivet sets,
and 3/16" punches for your rivet gun. I have had good luck with their
surplus tools.
I bought some 1/8" and 1/4" aluminum bars from a local supplier that I will
use for riveting practice. I hope to make my mistakes on those bars rather
than on my spar. I can also practice removing the rivets from the bars and
use the bars over and over for more practice. I'm buying the practice
rivets from Spruce.
Good luck with your upgrade.

If you are ordering rivets for practice, be sure to get the harder AD ones, they are the types specified in the drawings and are more difficult to put in.
I found that two separate "3X" rivet guns were not truly up to the task on the -6 AD (3/16) rivets. I found one at the yard store http://www.yardstore.com it was part number 11924 (APT Riveter 300) and was used so I don't know how many they have. It worked much better than others I borrowed that were called 3X. This one did not have a pressure regulator attached so you would need an external one.
I also found that having a new rivet set (the driver heads used on the gun) helps for us low experience types. The well used set I borrowed was harder to keep centered on the rivet. Of course, when I watched a really experienced person use them it looked so easy.
I am also modifying a rivet squeezer I found on ebay for use with the upgrade project. If it works, others are welcome to use it once I am finished.
For those starting to remove rivets, having some kind of drill guide to keep the drill perpendicular to the spar could greatly reduce damage to the existing holes. I have a few I will have to put bolts in.

I suspect he may mean the size of the set that fits in the end of the rivet
gun.

Terry, just make sure the sledge hammer has a polished surface.
Yesterday I had to remove a bunch of rivets from my HD centre wing skeleton.
To avoid damaging the parts, I did not drill until the rivet head comes off. I stopped a little early (practice determines when it is "a little early"), and then remove the remaining material with a pair of cutting pliers.
After all rivet heads are removed, the parts come apart quite easily (in this case, an L angle and the landing gear rib).
With the cutting pliers, I then remove the rest of the rivet - no need for a centre punch.
I thought maybe this process can be used to remove the XL skin without damaging the underlying rib flange.
Cheers
Carlos

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Right on, Carlos. I was taught by a guy who runs a wing shop to drill "just enough", and then use a small drift to snap the weakened head off. Never saw him screw up a hole.
