A hearty congratulations to Jim Johannes of Huntsville, TN. His Lightning
flew for the first time today with the ever capable Nick Otterback at the
controls. First reports are it flew hands off and the GRT Horizon 1 HX
screens are "awesome! Like flying Microsoft Flight Simulator X".

Jim's was serial number 87 and the 49th Lightning to fly. We currently have
a completion rate of 59.7%, all by the original owners/purchasers. Also,
we've had 12 first flights this year. I hope to report at least one more
before the year is out. Dave Stanley of NC is very close to having his first
flight also.

Attached are a couple of pictures. Please let me know if they don't go
through.

Yes it is Merry Christmas to the Lightning community.
I hear Santa is going to use the lightning this year instead of the sleigh, it is cheaper than feeding Rudolph. He will be equipping it with a set of Trick Air penetration skis for those roof top landings! He picked up a set at Custom fiberglass when he got his kit! Maybe we can get pics from the great white north of the installation!

A small typo on my part. Jim is from Huntsville, Alabama - not Tennessee.

My apologies to Jim and the state of Alabama!

Merry Christmas to all at Arion. Nick we need a picture of Santa in that lightning. How about a picture of all the lightnings on your web site so people can see all the different paint jobs that have been done. This would give people ideas on how great the Lightning looks.

Great Looking Plane!!!!  I love the paint scheme.  I was wondering if the Horizon EFIS's are the larger format?  Please provide a Photo.  I'm envious.

Brian C  The Horizon EFIS are the larger format screens.  As far as I know this is the first installation of such.  There are some other benefits that come with these EFIS as well.  I'm writing an article for the newsletter right now and that's one of the things that will be in there.  I'm sure that Buz is wondering when I'll finally get done with this article.  Been a busy year!  Brian W.

Brian
In my spare time I have made several mock panel layouts with the Horizon.  I will be looking forward to your write up.  When I looked at the GR web site I see that the Horizon HX comes in either 6.5 in or 8.4 in formats.  I was not sure if the 8.4 in displays could fit in the Lightning panel.  It does in my drawing but anything fits in my drawings.  It was one of my primary questions on my list for a flight test when I can find time to make it down to TN for a flight test.

Hi Brian,

Jim's screens are the 6.5" variety. It would be a bit of a squeeze but I think the 8.4" screens may work. You may have to relocate switches and such.

I think that one way that might make it happen was to add in a "shelf" for switches like on the Cirrus.  Just a thought.  Brian W.
