Guys:
I have not posted or read any posts here for a long time for various reasons including but not limited to - moving to Texas, a damaged airplane, a need to focus on my family after five years of airplane building and learning to fly, etc. Those things have passed and I have now started to work on the wing upgrade to N5SL. Last night I came up with what I think is a great idea. I removed several rivets from my center spar last week and my hands were sore from pounding out the center rivet pins with a punch and hammer. Not to mention I was constantly watching to make sure I didn't pound my left hand with the hammer.
I went into my new shop and pulled out an impact hammer I bought from H.F. a while back and never used. I pulled out the pointy tool and put in in my little lathe and turned down the end to the size of a rivet hole for a quarter inch or so, then reinstalled in in the tool. I hooked up the air hose and SHAZAAM! It worked perfectly. I tested it first on a scrap rivet, then went to town on my fuselage. This thing is wonderful and no more sore hands or pounding with the hammer on those stubborn rivets. This impact hammer tool has an adjustment in the handle and you can turn it down so that it just pushes out the stems.
I'll try to post some pics if there is any interest or if I didn't describe it properly.

Are you using a cordless electric hammer like the one I have seen at Home Depot?

Hey Scott thats exactly what i did harbor freight special C thats after screwing up the first hole with a cheap punch that shattered when i hit it with the hammer Good punches are NOT brittle

Guys,
The key I found in driving out the wing spar rivets is to clamp tightly on both sides of the rivet. If not, the three or four layers of spar material will separate, effectively gripping the rivet. On particularly stubborn rivets, I would take a 3/32 drill and try to hollow it out. This seemed to help. For me it seemed that about half the rivets came out easily with the air hammer method and the other half needed extra tender loving care to remove.
