I'm looking at the AMERI-KING AK-451 ELT at the moment and yes, as homebuilders of planes with more than one seat, we need an ELT.
What have you guys bought....Geoff

I installed the Ameri-King AK-450.  But, now that Canada requires the new 406.025 MHz ELT's, I suppose I will be buying another one before I start international flights.  I have heard that AmeriKing makes a 406.025 ELT that is direct drop-in replacement for the AK-450, so you can use the same installation, just a different unit.

I have an Artex ME406. I haven't crashed yet so it is not fully tested.

Spruce is now offering a 406 MHz unit with an internal GPS. This reduces the
diameter of the search area from 1-3 nm to under 300 ft.

SPRUCE 406 ELT W/ INTERNAL GPS 11-08053 $1360

Um, correct me if I'm wrong but I think Canada backed away from that one. I think the rule reads that if you don't have a 406 ELT, you have to have a placard warning your passengers.

I could be wrong though so double check for yourself.

I have the Ameriking 406 mhz ELT. I hope I never have to test it! It will
interface with any GPS, though it requires some wiring to do so. Prices
for the 406 ELT's are gradually coming down. Most also transmit on 121.5 as
well.

Votes are coming in.
Ameri-king seems to be in the lead but what models have you purchased.
The 450 is 121MHz and therefore pointless.
All 451's are 406MHz
The 451-2 is a little under $1000. It has no GPS and is accurate to 1-2 kilometers.
the 451-? with GPS is at least twice the price. However I don't think it actually has a GPS unit inside it. Reading about it I see that they offer an interface only for the extra cost.
The only GPS I can find where they actually state that THERE IS AN ACTUAL GPS INSIDE. NO NEED FOR AN INTERFACE HERE is the one craig mentioned. Aircraft spruce 406 ELT W/ INTERNAL GPS 11-08053 $1360.
So Craig. your Artex ME406 is listed at $1949. can you throw some light on this? what do you get for that much. Is it just the interface to connect to your panel mount GPS.
I did call Ameri-king and was told that the 451-2 ($764) has no GPS and no interface.
Unless someone corrects me it seems like my choice is between the 451-2 with no GPS and accuracy of 1-2 kilometers OR the 406 ELT W/ INTERNAL GPS 11-08053 $1360 from spruce.
BTW the "ELT" in the last sentence is the brand name of the unit. "Emerging Lifesaving Technologies"

The Ameriking is the cheapest, which is why I bought it. I'd love to have a
GPS already included with it, but at the time these weren't available.
Maybe they can develop a retrofit! Having flown S & R in the CAP even the
non GPS 406 ELT gives tremendous more accuracy than the 121.5. and really
narrows the focus of a search though it takes a little more time to lock in
then the GPS ones. That, plus a 406 PLB, a SPOT, and a cell phone
hopefully will suffice, not that I ever want to test any of them! Never
want to see my BRS deployed either!

I got my airtex ME 406 with a whip antenna for less than a thousand. Don't know why Aircraft Spruce is charging so much. Installed easily. .....Fred....N9701

Actually there are many versions of the Artex ME406 package. The price
partly depends on what antenna is included. For slow airplanes like ours
whip is fine and that kit only costs $875:

ME406, Spruce p/n 11-03492, Artex ME406 ELT w/ whip antenna. Programmed for
US registered aircraft. $875.00

Also there is now a cheap(ish) add-on to connect your existing GPS NMEA
output to the ME406:

ARTEX ME-232 NAV INTERFACE 11-08036 $250.00

There are 2 Fred. The me406 elt and the me406 hm elt. the HM is twice the price at $1949.
Well thanks for the feedback guys. I still don't know what I'll get but I know now what each will do.
It's between the 451-2 at $764 and the ELT406GPS (with GPS inside) at $1360........Geoff

OK i just called ARTEX
The most expensive ($1950) HM models are for helicopters Duh
The $1450 models are the same as the $875 model. we're paying (at)600 extra for the antenna.
The ME-232 interface, according to the tech guy I just spoke to, is not in production yet. maybe mid year. ASSCO has none in stock(makes sense)
The other interface (NMEA-0183 protocol) is expected at ASSCO next week)
