I was out flying yesterday and the OAT was 25 degrees. That's pretty cold for Fl so I rapidly froze my butt off (I wish !) The little muffin fan in my heater was not putting out enough air. It was warm enough but not enough flow. Any ideas for a replacement fan that has a reasonably low amp draw?

We don't use a heater at 25 degrees. We fly at work up to -40 degrees
F. Now that is cold!

Manitoba, Canada
Currently 16 degrees F.

I was flying yesterday, (6 degrees F) and today at about 3 degrees
F....up from minus 3 F, and I was warm enough. I had found a Dr.
Scholl's back pad vibrator and warmer that draws 1000mA...yup, 1 amp.
I only use the heating part and it feels good....you might look into
one of these.

As an aside, I was flying into what looked like low fog/clouds at
about 2500 MSL, and the visibility was getting worse, so I turned
around and headed back home. When I got on the ground, I found about
3/16" of ice on the prop, upper corners of the windshield, and about
1/16" along the front of the wing, just above and just below the
leading edge. There was ice on the jury struts, the landing gear, the
lift struts....just about everywhere. When I started to fly, the sky
was clear, and the sun was out in spots. No indication of foul
weather on the local airport reports, but I was 15 miles from the
reporting station. I had noticed that the visibility was fairly good
out both sides of the plane, but not so good straight ahead. Then I
noticed the ice building on the upper corners of the windshield, near
the spar-to-windshield covers, and I realized that the reason that
the vis wasn't so good straight ahead was because I was trying to see
through an iced up windshield. Ski flying is great, but sometimes you
run into stuff like that.

Got the skis on yet, Dick? : )

What was your water temp? I tape my radiator when it is that cold to keep the water temp up. I too have a muffin fan.

some of the high power CPU cooling fans move alot more air than the stock fan that comes with the KF. You can also make a heat muff in about an hour out of some thin aluminum.

I will get some pics of the install I did on a buddy's Avid that took about an hour. in the mean time, I will give a quick description.

.060 aluminum cut to the max length you can get between the muffler hangers (around 7" or so). 3 lengths of the fiber rope that goes around fireplace doors. wrap a length around each end of the muffler to seal the ends off using the glue / paste that they provide with the rope. cut out an inlet and outlet hole and make nozzles with scrap aluminum by wrapping it around a chunk of wood the size of the scat tubing. few pop rivets and some high temp RTV and and you have the nozzles. Run a length of the rope from one end of the shroud to the other between the nozzles so the air has to go all the way around the muffler to get to the outlet. After the rope ends set up, I wrapped the aluminum around the muffler and held in place with a couple wrapps of safety wire pulled tight. A half dozen or so holes drilled and pop riveted holds it all together with a wrap piece of aluminum tape doing the final seal on the joint.

The secret I found was wrapping the heat muff with a foil backed muffler wrap to stop the cold air from hitting the outside of the heat muff. I found some wrap in the performance section of the local auto-parts store. It came in a blanket about 36" X 40" and was sort of spendy, but it has done 3 planes with enough left over to do a couple more.

edit for a link to the wrap: http://www.jscspeed.com/universal/thermotec/heat_barrier.htm

Part # 14001 is what I used as it would be impossible to get the adhesive back wrap in place unless you took the muffler off the plane.

Any way you can force feed it some outside air? Or do you want to
stick with a recirc system?

the usual way to ''force feed'' is with a naca vent mounted in the cowl or with a round hole in the cowl in front. lycs. and cont. often would have that rould hole in the plenum baffling right inside the air intake hole.
 bob noffs
with a ''force feed'' thru a heat muff my piper warrior would get as warm as you wanted it at 15 deg f.

Well, I knew you guys were going to bust my b--ls about me wining about 25 degree temp (now it is 17) but remember this is Florida (as summer will testify) My plane is not set up for this "cold" weather. And besides I was the only one flying in my area everyone else was inside (might have also been due to the 25-30 kt wind gusts)
Anyway, I had my water/oil cooler taped up like a mummy, so they were warm. I really don't want to do a whole lot of modifying to my aircraft as this cold weather is a relatively rare thing so am going to find a muffin fan with more output.
Thanks for the muffler heater idea,Leonard. That sounds like the Rans S7 heater that Spruce sells. If we get alot more of this"global warming" weather down here and I can't get the heater up to par, I will look into the muff idea.
