At one point on a list I had a reply from someone who
actually was using the GDC34A Arinc to serial converter
like I am to get TIS traffic on their Chelton or other
EFIS from the GTX330 Transponder.

Right now that's my last remaining thing to debug that
I've identified, and I'm hoping to talk to someone
who's got it working to verify settings.

Anyone out there with that equipment that can comment?

I have the equipment, but like you am debugging. It's in and flying but
I can't get it to work..

Mike,
Do you have the GNS480 for a Nav/Com, or the 430/530?
I called to ask them for an update today and right
now their questioning that maybe the 480/330 are
teaming up to thwart the function in some way.
Would be interesting to know.

Also, sure would be nice if they'd get their 480/330
interfaces figured out so they can drop the whole
GDC34A altogether and just read the serial direct.

Tim,

I am interfacing the GTX330 through the DAC GDC34A to the Chelton EFIS.
I'm trying to figure out if the GTX330 needs the ARINC 429 input from
the DAC GDC34A in order to provide the ARINC output. Currently I have
connected the GTX330 ARINC 429 output to the GDC34 and the RS232 TX/RX
to the Chelton EFIS. I didn't connect the ARINC input to the GTX330 for
two reasons, I didn't think it was needed, and it wasn't pre-wired when
I built the panel. I am thinking that the GTX330 needs position
information from the GPS in the EFIS, and therefore requires the ARINC
429 input. What do you think? I have a call into Garmin and hope to
hear from them Monday. DAC was no help and Chelton has not been much
help on this issue.

Mike,

I spoke at length last week with a DAC guy who said that no, you don't
need the ARINC 429 back from the GDC34A to the GTX330. I actually
have mine wired that way now. I think the GTX330 should be getting
position info from the GNS480 in my case (connected via serial). My
traffic does work between the GTX330 and GNS480, so those 2 items
should have what they need. I did get an email from Peter at D2AV
tonight and he said that he found that the Chelton should be
set to HIGH speed to talk to the DAC box. The GTX330 should
be set to HIGH talking to the DAC too. He said to go edit the
system limits and set COM5 to high. I'm not sure if that's an
available option though...I'll find out tomorrow. I did have
some cool experience today with traffic on my GNS480...can't
wait to get it running on the Chelton. I think we'll get it to
work. If not, it sounds like they're working on getting the
GNS480/GTX330 serial info figured out so we may be able to get
rid of the DAC box eventually anyway...that would be nice.
I'll let you know what I figure out tomorrow.

I think in my case I need the 429 lines to the GTX330 because the
transponder does not have any position information. That is unless the
transponder gets it from radar but I doubt it. So in my case I think I
need those lines for position information to the GTX330.

I suppose that could be true. I don't know this at all, but I thought
that TIS worked because they had you on radar and they sent your
position using the datalink. Not that you sent your position
using the datalink and they displayed it. I would think that
position info wouldn't be needed except for the display of the
position on the screen. This reaches past what I know though.

Tim,

I was able to get the DAC, GTX330, and the Chelton TIS system to work.
My problem was a simple RS232 ground. The one thing that I did not do
that the DAC install manual implies was to use both ARINC 429 channels.
I only used one of them.

That's great. I think the wiring is all fine on mine, but Peter tipped
me off that Com 23/24 need to be set to HIGH in the setup. He had
originally told me 5, which was incorrect. I haven't had a chance
to try it since the news a couple days ago, but should soon. As
for the 2 ARINC channels, if you mean in/out then you're right,
there is no need for the IN on the GTX330. If you mean that you
only used A or B, then that is something I'll have to look at
the diagram and read and think through. I have both hooked up
on mine....A&B. I just turned off the IN on the GTX330, but I do
have the wires in place. Can always move them to something more
useful.

Thanks for keeping me posted. This is going to be so cool. The
Traffic on the GNS480 is good, but this will be much much better.

Tim,

I only use the one ARINC 429 channel out of the GTX330. I did not use
the second out channel or the in channel.

Mike,

I now have the traffic working too. It was a confusing
port setting in the unit's setup. After setting Port 23/24
to HIGH, the traffic works beautifully. It's strange,
because the J1 wiring diagram shows it as RX5/TX5, which
is COM5, but the setup refers it to COM 23/24...which
isn't right as far as I know, and it isn't referencing the
pins on the J1 connector either. Anyway, that does indeed
do the trick. It's very very nice to have. I flew near
a class B area (MSP) to test it out and ended up seeing
planes near my altitude that I never would have known about.

At this point, I have nothing left to complain about. Wink

Thanks,

Tim,

Good deal! I'm still working on the WSI weather interface, I'm having
reception problems.

Funny you should say that.... I have WSI too. I ditched the
standard antenna, and bought a Comant ComDat combination
GPS/WSI antenna for my WSI and GNS480. My Chelton GPS uses
my old GNS480's antenna. The Chelton GPS has been rock
solid. The GNS480 using the new Comant has dropped out
a few times briefly. My WSI weather, I haven't paid for
a subscription yet, so I haven't been overly worried. But,
I know that under FAULTS you can watch the BER signal of
the WSI, and a low number like 5 is good. At some times
I have 5, some I have 40/60/200, or even "No Lock". I'm
hoping that this isn't, but guessing that this is, indicative
of poor WSI reception. Seeing as it's both the WSI and the
GPS, I thought maybe it was the antenna. Comant offered to
take it back in for testing, but that means removing it
from the top of the plane and sending it in...and then
what do I do with 2 big access holes while I wait for
the testing to complete? So if you find a solution for
that, pass it on as well. It just shouldn't be this painful.
