Hey Guys and Gals,
I was wondering what people are using for their smoke systems. I have a RV-4, and I'm wondering what I should do to get smoke in that plane.

I've looked at the "smoking Airplanes" site, and it looks nice, but so does the price tag.

What is everyone using?
How about oils?
How about two spray nozzles?

Thanks for all of the help!

For my Pitts (no electrical system) I used a freon bottle plumbed with a

small regulator. I put in a gallon of corvus oil and then pressurized
the bottle with air. A small ball valve let me turn the smoke on/off.
If you have room, mount a smoke tank .... or make a tank that straps to
the passenger seat with quick disconnects for the plumbing.

I bought a 55 gallon drum of Corvus oil many years ago. When that ran

out, corvus oil was hard to find ... and it had become expensive. I
went to a local transmission shop and they gave me all the automatic
transmission fluid I wanted.

Makes the smoke more even so it looks better.

Smoking Airplane system.  IF you were to design and built yourself C you will have just as much money up plus your time.
How about oils?

DO NOT use ATF or motor oil. It gets all over the belly of the airplane.
Smoke oil works best. Diesel fuel is 2nd but flammable.  Smoke oil has the longest HANG time.  Diesel is just as thick close to the airplane but THINS out the smoke trail quickly.
How about two spray nozzles?

Necessary for good smoke stream.

Thanks for all of the help!

In my experience, if you're getting oil all over the belly, you're
flowing too much oil .... no matter what the type. ATF is a little
thinner than Corvus oil. I wouldn't think of using motor oil .... the
flash point is way too low.

Gary,

I agree with you about the oils with one addition. DO NOT use recycled french fry oil...don't ask how I know. I almost got a new callsign outta that one. I like Slick lots mobetter than "Greesey"

I have to disagree with you about the roll your own. My smoke is just as strong as any system I've seen, and I'm not more than $200 into it. Here are some pics of my system http://picasaweb.google.com/tconerv8/SmokeSystem#

A poly tank from NorthernTool.com for $36 Mine is a 3.5 gallon model that fits in the forward baggage space in the -8.

I picked my pump up at an ag supply place for about $60. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_357081_357081

The solenoid is about $35 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110380750209&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Various hoses and wiring don't add up to the $500 difference, so I splurged on a Smoking Airplanes nozzle for $45.

All that said, the guy at Smoking Airplanes is a hell of a nice guy and if I were not so darned cheap, I'd have bought from him, but I couldn't swallow the price.

Tim
