Recent discussions about the weight of the aluminum landing gear has me thinking about ways to improve it. In it's present design it is just a straight square bar bent to shape. If you look at this design no effort has been made to lighten it by either drilling out unnecessary metal or tapering the sides.
Besides reducing weight, with the proper taper, the added flex in the leg portion would give greater flex allowing greater travel without damaging the gear.
As I am still in the building stage I am only speaking hypothetically to see what others have done.

After the last round of gear talk I bit the bullet and sent $$ to my aero
engineer buddy to do his number thing on a composite gear, he's says about
half the weight and NO flattening out on a hard landing. This project has
been on my short list for a number of yrs and it's time to do it.
It will be a drop in replacement, probably be a little wider track as it's
not practical to make the sharp bends like in alum.
Mold is half finished so when I get the engineering report I'll be ready to
build the first one. I'll need a test vehicle, any body that wants to try
one gimme a note off list, my 701 is still a LONG way from finished.

I'd be interested to know if anyone has built a composite nose leg, cost, strength, weight etc... problems??

John.

I would be interested in purchasing one. But not much interested in
being the test pilot. Let me know how the project comes along.

Add me to the long list of people who will be interested to hear how the composite gear testing turns out. My mechanical engineer brother-in-law has been shaking his head over the weight of the stock gear ever since he first saw it. I'd volunteer to help test but I'm still at least a year, probably two from flying.
