Europa Guru's,

I am planning to use HID lamps for my taxi and landing lights. Any considerations, suggestions or pictures to where Europa Builders have placed them? I think I will be placing mine in the front of my cowl below the air inlets. I have plenty of room due to the fact that I stretched my Rotax purposed cowl to fit my Jabiru 3300 installation (approx. 8" stretch).  Any ideas would be greta.

Cheers and thanks to all,

Jeff Paris Rochester, New York Europa Classic Monowheel kit #A012  Jabiru 3300 2450 hours into the build and getting ready to prime and paint all my flying surfaces.

Hi Jeff,

I feel not to be a Guru but I am brave enough to answer:

I have two 35 W Xenon lights. RT´s taxi light is hidden in the lower cowl turbo air intake (I have 912S so the intake is not necessary for my engine). It is ON in the attached photo. RT´s landing light is built-in to the duct above the air cooler´s air intake. It is OFF but visible in the attached photo. Both are very effective and I have been happy with them all night long. Typical GA landing light 100 W like in Cessna is a children´s torch when compared with these Xenons. An extra benefit: they does not care off vibration or so and their expected life span is around +1000 hrs. They are also light weight. Today you can find even 500 Watts leds and their size is like a mail stamp. But a cooling is a huge (power led´s cooler is huge!) problem.

Hi Jeffrey,

I mounted my light at the top of the left outrigger fairing. It is a 35w 'taxilight' with a conventional bulb. However, the illumination is really not very satisfactory. One day, I will mount an HID light in the same spot. I plan to use a light from Trail Tech. I think a 30 watt HID SCMR16 # 4252-SX will meet my needs. See catalog.

I also intend to look at using a 'snowdome for a fairing. This idea was posted earlier by a very creative Europaphile.

Cheers, John

[quote] Just on Raimo's and johns note on the hid lights, you might find this site
useful www.hid50.com I have not purchased anything from him yet, but
the prices seem good, and he has a lot of good information that is worth
a read if considering HID. Only problem is he sells just the bulbs and balasts
no lights to put them in, so you need to find a suitable light to take the
bulb, my thoughts were some of the new motorcycle lights are just about
the right size and could be dismantled and fitted into the cowl.

While we're on the subject, I'll be needing to purchase my position lights soon, to be installed inside a rebate on the front/outermost wingtips inside the custom clear fairings I bought from Aerial Pleasures. I've seen some combo position/landing light options but I think they're halogen, not HID. Anyone seen a US based HID landing light option that would fit in the wingtip and include red/green position lights?

Thanks,

Dan

for those like me that did nont know:-

www.hid50.com yiels the following:-

High intensity Discharge lighting is light from a plasma discharge rather than a filament. The system involves a combined igniter and ballast to start the light and maintain the current, and certain gases and metal salts to create the light. Overall the system uses less energy than halogen lighting, while producing 4 times more light per watt.  HID lights are sometimes referred to as Xenon bulbs, due to the presence of Xenon gas between the electrodes. Note that some halogen bulbs contain small amounts of Xenon (up to 5%) and accordingly brand themselves as 2Xenon lights 2, but they are not High Intensity Discharge lamps and do not put out greater light than standard halogen bulbs.
