With spring somewhere in the future (I hope) I am thinking of replacing the hoses on my Rotax 912. The oil hose is almost 8 years old and the fuel hose about 4 years old.  I burn auto gas containing alcohol and wanted some advice from folks on what fuel and oil hose to use.

You should consider SAE30R7 for low pressure especially for gasohol. If the

fuel is pressurized then SAE30R9 is recommended. These can also be used for

oil I believe. See attached Goodyear cut sheets.

JOE,

These Goodyear hoses are all English sizes and are not metric. Do you see

any problems trying to fit them to a Rotax engine??

LES: I don't know how they would fit as I have not used this hose. I just

did some research on material compatibility with gasohol and found the

SAE/Goodyear products. I guess it would depend if you are pushing the hose

over a barb and using a clamp or have a threaded hose end fitting. The later

may be available with an English dimension to fit onto the hose and a metric

thread to connect to the engine.

Why don't you go to a Chevy dealer and see what they're using for fuel line in the Flex fuel cars? If it will stand up to E 85 in the engine compartment of a car it should work fine in a plane. As for metric conversion there's most likely something close enough to work just fine even though it's measured in inches.

I am starting the Rotax 912 course this morning at S Miss Light aircraft.  (refresher course- two stroke, last week) I too am in the process of replacing  all the water hoses as they are even older than yours. The first ones  removed were in pretty good shape. I ended up buying a 2 meter length of 17mm  hose from Lockwood ( EXPENSIVE !) . I did not want to stretch  available 5/8 heater hose over the nipples although Ronnie,our instructor,says  you can do it. I have a thing about the proper parts. The fuel hoses I replaced  were the best Gates fuel injection hoses I could find,the oil hoses came  from CPS. This water hose replacement is going to be a real pain! Lots  of stuff to remove,corrosion to clean,etc but it has to be done.

Dick, I used silicone radiator hose from Sport Hoses in the UK when I replumbed my 582.

The standard kit supplied hose was Gates SAE30R7 hose.  The R9

is hose with better specs for pressure and generally high endurance in 

an engine compartment.  FWF I am using stainless braided R9 hose, actually back to the tank selector valve, and further back, just uncovered R9. The stainless braided hose is also covered with firesleeve.



The kit was supplied with 5/16" and 1/4" hose, not metric, at least not in my kit.  Diameter adjustment is via hose clamp!



For oil lines I have switched to Aeroquip blue socketless hose, it has

superior specs to the R9.

  That is the correct sizes for the fuel  hoses but not the water  coolant hoses,they are 17 mm.

 I also went with the blue oil hose(from CPS)

You are absolutely correct, the coolant hose is 17 mm and should be

available from any hose shop.



I bought mine locally and just had to tell the clerk that it was for a marine

inboard engine since they don't sell to aircraft!  Same deal when I had

to originally buy inner tubes for the nose gear - the local tire shops will

only sell the tubes if they are for a go-kart, not an aircraft!

I have just be told of a fuel line hose called Barricade Fuel Hose.  This is supposed to be a new product (at NAPA anyway) made by Gates and safe for use with fuel containing alcohol. Evidently it costs less than $2 per foot. Anyone using it?

I havn't been able to locate 17mm heater hose anywhere in America except for Rotax dealers, so naturally I'm highly interested in where you obtained it?...

Please note that I am talking about fuel line. I was told that the product is new and that NAPA stores are stalking it.

 I am also in the process of replacing my hoses but I also could not find any 17mm hose in the US . I finally bit the bullet and paid the money to Lockwood and bought a 6 meter piece.

 Today I am going to try and find the formed hose that goes from the spyder to number three cylinder. That little jewell is almost $50 from Rotax. If I can find this formed piece in 5/8 heater at NAPA, then 5/8 it will be.

  I was able to find some CT wide band clamps at Grainger. It was about $6 for 10 of them vs $6 a piece at the Rotax dealer. These will replace my old screw type which really chewed up the hoses

  I am sure glad I started the hose replacement as they were real bad. This job will certainly take awhile

From the information I have been reading on this site it seems to me that Barricade Fuel Hose is a good material to use on the 912. Still not sure if there is  reasonable alternative to the high cost 13mm oil hose available at aviation supply websites, but hope that there is.

Barricade is a couple of years old and is promoted as a "green"

product because it has low permeance to fuel vapor.  Otherwise

it seems to be the same spec as the standard gate 30R7 hose.

The Gates website did not mention any special resistance to abrasion,

heat, wear, etc. Like other Gates hose it is fine for E10.  I don't

think we will be seeing anyone using E85 in aircraft now or in the 

future due to the low energy density and the high vapor pressure.

Scott,

  I did find the 5/8 "formed hose, however, I had to insert an internal spring to keep it from collapsing as the bend in the hose was not quite enough. I actually used the spring that was in the old hose. The prior owner had used a straight piece of 5/8 , inserted springs, and bent it to shape. This lasted about 15 years so hopefully it should work for me. I don't know what material the spring was made of.

  The NAPA store did tell me that they have hoses that include an internal spring and you can bend them to shape.

  I used the old hoses as a pattern for the new hoses. The clearances were quite close to the exhaust pipes on my plane so I wrapped the exhaust pipes with 1' wrap and used ss tie wraps to secure them. They look nice so hopefully it should cut down on the heat on those hoses.
