Hi guys,
I must chime in, about the design flaw. The XL has a lot going for it,
but it was a redesign, which reduced the height and length of the center
spar. Then the center spar seemed to be placed at a slight angle from
flight loading. The bolt pattern for wing attachment was new and can be
over-sized if not carefully reamed. Pictures seen of the crashed
center-spar suggest damage began over a longer time than what was seen
on the day of the crash. I wondered what they beefed up when the design
came out, what with the full cantilever wings and smaller section center
spar than what’s seen on the HD series. The XL are light planes, but
carry the same loads as previous models. I don’t think it’s likely we’ll
know what the final “flaw” is until one breaks up and the pilot
survives. I’d be flying an XL single seat after what’s occurred and
would put in the structural kit as soon as it is/was available. It’s
still a great plane.
I don’t think any XL wing has failed that hadn’t seen the center spar
fail first. Dance lightly around that if you want, but I believe the fix
for the “flaw” is properly directed.
Respectfully,
