So now's the time to let you all know that in spite of falling totally in love with the Drifter Red Rocket (an aerobatic, clipped wing Drifter...that cruises at 80+ and STILL doesn't have a windshield,) I've gone out and bought a Sport Flight Talon Typhoon. It's a third generation Drifter - looks like a Drifter on steroids. Not as gigantic as the Air Cam, sort of the Mama Bear between the Papa Bear Air Cam and the Baby Bear Drifter. And it has a slight windshield - just a slight one, but more than the Drifter's.
I really considered a Kolb - seriously, seriously. I can't tell you how this list - and all the wonderful folks I've met who fly Kolbs, made me want to be a Kolb driver. But I wanted something much more open than any of the speedier Kolbs, and once you're used to flying completely in the open, buying a fully enclosed and taking the doors off still feels claustraphobic.
So, unless something goes very awry, I'll be flying my Talon to the disorganized Kolb Fly In at Monument Valley this May. I can hardly wait!!!

Yep, this was my main problem after I sold my quicksilver years ago. At the time I couldn't find anything with the flight characteristics I wanted that matched the view from my quick.
My trike came really close (had the strut in the front is the only obstruction that my quick didn't have) but I've ended up concluding i'm a 3-axis guy. I loved flying weight shift but I just kept missing that independent yaw control you get with a rudder.
I've seen an FS II on youtube that had no covering on the cage - that struck me as a brilliant idea to improve the view of the already very good view of the Kolb. My FSII had covering on its cage and of course its view wasn't quite as good as my trike or my quicksilver.
Glad to hear from another pilot for whom the view is important. That's the main reason I only fly high/rear engined pushers now. I'm always mystified by pilots who don't care that they can't see anything out of their planes, except a little hole in front or above, but nothing else.....

Narrow point of view? Charles Lindbergh made it to Paris with out a forward
view. Most who fly find that what ever they fly provides them with an
enjoyable view.

Well... I dunno about that. I've seen a lot of planes for sale over the years that are for sale simply because the owners became bored with flying them. Far and away they have crappy views above all, spam cans and lots of front-engined tractors. The owners report just not getting much of a charge out of flying them after a while and were sort of bored with flying in general too.
I met a couple of such folks at the UL field where I took my UL training. They went up with my UL instructor in his quicksilver "Sluggo" and were stunned by the experience. They didn't realize what they'd been missing all that time and went about getting back into aviation.
That was my experience too. I was right at the end of my private when I realized I was thinking of giving flying up altogether. Couldn't put my finger on why. Went up in the instructor's "Sluggo" and havn't been bored since.
Mostly because I fly planes with good views, like the Kolb.....
But that's just what I've seen. True lots of instrument pilots don't care much about being able to see, well, anything out the window.....

I took an hour of instruction in this wonderful machine before I bought my Mkll. I loved the open flying! The plane was in Baton Rouge, LA but I cant remember the fellas name. Ive often thought about finding another Mkll and configuring it this way.
