I purchased, Aug '09, a 1994 Kitfox IV, which came with a new 582 grey head. The engine has never been started and appears today as it would have come from the factory in 1994. The question is do I run it as is or tear it down for inspection? The exterior and what I can see of the interior, intake and exhaust ports, appear clean and free of rust. The entire kit was stored indoors, but not necessarily in a controlled temperature environment. Also I plan to install the static ports just forward of the horizontal stabilizer on both sides of the fuselage. Does anyone have the exact location measurements for this location? Appreciate any guidance from the group.

I would say have the engine torn down and inspected.  Might be just fine inside C but no way to know for sure without haveing a looksee.   New seals installed then also.  Rotax recomends that seals be replaced every 5 years.  1994 till now is 16 years.  Jim Chuk  Avids C  Kitfox 4  Mn

That's one approach, no doubt the sanest. I had the same circumstances when I purchased my unfinished Model 2. The 582 gray head was delivered in the early 90's and never run. I did the break-in protocol in 2005 with no problems. Perhaps foolishly, I then flew it despite it's age without incident. I did have to have the C-Box rebuilt at about 20 hours, however, when began to slip and over-rev the engine during a run-up. There should be a service bulletin about that on the Rotax site that you should check out if you have that gearbox. The engine now has 150+ hours and I've gained confidence in it. It will go in for teardown and inspection soon, however.

Thank you both for our feedback. Any guidance regarding the static port location near the tail?

My 582 was built in '91, ran for one hour in 2000, then first flew in 2006. Before flight I pulled the top end and inspected, looking primarily for evidence of rust. Talking with some Rotax mechanics they recommended running it and seeing if the seals leaked. It ran fine for 50 hours, then I had it rebuilt. The only weakness in the old grey heads was the crank and you might want to consider upgrading to the new crank. I did NOT update the rotary shaft seal and it has worked fine for 400+ hours.

I had my static port here and it didn't work very well. It was about 10mph low. I then vented to the cabin and found the ASI to be much more accurate.

Somebody ought to find it for you in their builder's manual, but mine
is at the hangar. I'll get it for you later, if someone doesn't do it
before. It seems like it was a separate item, like an option, so
maybe the location dimensions aren't in the builder's manual, but in
a separate sheet. But they're out there. If I can't find mine, I'll
measure the plane.

Now that you mention it, Guy, I'm going to the hangar and unhook my
static port feed to the ASI and see if my airspeed indication, also
about 10 mph low, improves. Currently I have the dual static ports,
and have been content to fly for nearly 4 years not caring how close
the airspeed matched the groundspeed, but this gives me an excuse to
fly today if I needed one.
