It’s hard for those that know me on the list to believe I am about to ask this question but…
How low is too low for CHT’s? As many of know I have been battling high CHT’s due to my cowl/plenum configuration. Recently I have been flying LOP which has greatly reduced my CHT’s which was the goal all along. I now have significant control over CHT’s when LOP as a function of that funny red knob.
My question is how low is too low to run cylinders? I have read pretty consistently about shock cooling and to keep the cylinder temp change under 50 degrees / minute but I don’t find any consistent numbers on the bottom end of the cylinder temperature operation range. Is 320 acceptable? I read about some pilots in cold regions running in the low 200’s (mostly 4 cyl. Lycoming). That seems unreasonably low to me. Heck, with the James cowl and plenum I am able to get to low 200’s just by opening the hangar door.

320 is fine for cruise cht temp as far as I know. We see them quiet often on the Saratoga that I fly and all is great

I run my 200 hp Mooney around 290-320 ROP and maybe 20-30 cooler LOP
in Aridzona and points east to NJ. Have 600 hours on my rebuild to
date. Coolest cylinder may be around 270. I only see above 350 on a
hot day during climbout. For normally aspirated engines there really
is no such thing as shock cooling. You might get shock heating if you
apply takeoff power before getting engine temps up a bit.
