The canopy on my CJ makes a whistling sound that is so loud ATC had a hard time listening at times (keying the mike and if the volume is up too loud, it is a bit deafening). Thought it might be the canopy bow seals that had a gap in them. They have been replaced with no improvement. I can stop the whistling sound by opening the front canopy to the second stop. Any ideas?

Craig,
That's going to be a tough one to isolate. It's probably going to be a very small opening that is not obvious. So try starting with the front window. Put duct tape around the front window frame where the frame meets the Plexiglas. Also tape up the vent inlet at the bottom front. Then go fly. If that doesn't do it, then move to the next section; the front slider. With you in the front seat, have someone tape the canopy bow around the seal and at the rear of the slider where it overlaps the center section. Then go fly. Continue the process moving back to the next section if you haven't located it yet.

Is it whistling Dixie?
Though this has never happened to me before, I believe I would try the following. Before getting airborne try tapeing the edges of the canopy on the inside with wide masking tape. Make sure you do that area above and behind your head. In effect this is sealing the canopy. Now at your normal cruse speeds, try removing the tape one section at a time. Maybe this can give you an idea of exactly where the noise is being created. Many of us old 707/747 guys are usually hard of hearing because of the small sonic shock wave that usually hung out near the cockpit side window. At least that is what we were told. I DO NOT think that your problem but air does strange things around the cockpit.

I had this exact same problem with my -52 years ago. The problem is caused
by having just the right amount of gap between the leather seal and the
sliding section of canopy.
Fixed it by add 3/4" by 1/4" high density weather stripping in two layers to
the existing seal. Works great. No more whistle or cold air.
