List,
I would be VERY careful tipping or even moving the fuselage with the center section out. I personally saw one buckle that wasn't supported with the center section out. Look at what is left. Not much.

Jonathan - Did you grind out the gear to clear the attaching bolts when you turned the gear around. I was going to turn mine around but was worried about the amount of metal ground off which would be on the back side after turning around. Would this be too much total material removed and weaken the gear??

Hi Bobby,

Yes I nothched the gear, was simple, just draw lines 90 degrees to the existing notches, and make new ones! It is no more than a notch, half the diameter of the 'bolts' or studs that point down and hold the gear in place. The gear is way too strong for the plane, but I love the forgiving nature of it. I recon you could cut huge holes in the landing gear, and it would still be strong enough!

Hi Bobby,

Before I put my gear on the aircraft with the flat side forward, I had done it with the flat side aft. I called Zenith and they said there was no problem having notches fore and aft on the gear. By the way, if I have luggage in the plane, I do have the tail drop when stepping onto the wing... unless I do it quickly. However, I have no problem keeping the nose off the ground during my landing and 100 feet thereafter on roll out.

I will take this opportunity to turn my gear around also. Now that the
center section is back in and the fuselage is no longer at risk of being
distorted. While the wings off there is no better time.

I changed the landing on my 601XL yesterday. It was easier than expected.
Took about 40 minutes to turn the gear
around to place the flat side forward. My wings are off with the upgrade.
I placed a padded 2x8 across the fuselage
beneath the rear spar attach plates and two jacks held it up as you would
use a wheelbarrow. The aircraft is really
not very heavy at this point and in this condition. It requires
apporximately a 6 inch lift to remove the gear.
As Jonathan mentioned, use a square to mark the location of the new notches
on the opposite side of the gear so the
new notches are directly across from the old notches.
