Anyone building a -7 have problems with the spar bolt hole locations in the
F-7114 gussets? I am having trouble getting bolts to go through the center
section and then through the gusset holes. I know the bolts are close
tolerance, but.... I can rationalize that the close tolerance is needed for
the heavy spar end and the heavy components of the center section. Do you
think I can open up the holes in the gussets a bit?

Dave,
This is a known problem - fortunately solvable. Van's will tell you that
the affected components are match drilled, unfortunately the assembly is
what counts and mis-alignments creep in to their assembly processes. I
had special endmills made that fit inside the holes (both sizes) and
would only cut on the end rather than the sides - thus clearing the
interference without damaging the precision holes. If your misalignment
is slight it may be possible to clear using a machinists scraper in a
careful way. If you can't make this work send me your address off-list
and I'll send you the endmills. Make sure to check both sides of the
fuse spar as well as the wing inserts - I found issues in both (yes it
is a quickbuild). The most difficult part of the repair was aligning the
spar holes once the interference was cleared - I had some expert help
from Van's east coast representative to unrivet the forward portion of
the spar within the fuse, the wings were then plugged in and
pseudo-precision pins (also available if you need them) inserted to
align the parts. The spar was then re-riveted to hold the (now correct)
alignment. Hope this last step isn't necessary in your case but I
mention it as it does happen (mine is not the only case.....)
Regards,
Joe
