Have been flying for two weeks (17.8 hours). No structural or engine problems whatsoever but struggling with the glass panel (GRT Horizon WS with dual screens). The amount of information available is overwhelming and quite beyond my capabilities (300 total hours, 30 of dual instrument-using only VOR/ILS systems, and no prior "glass" time.) And I am way up here in Maine where there are no instructors with GRT experience. Is there an online, or CD, glass course available that would be compatible with the GRT system? Any other advice appreciated. Jay Rowe #40301

Jay, I don't know if GRT has a "Demo" mode of operation or not, but if
it does, the best thing you can do is to spend countless hours behind
the actual screens doing simulations. Each system has it's own "user
navigation", by that I mean each vendors design is built around a
sequence of buttons that are pushed to activate various functions and to
alter the information that is presented on the screen. It does appear
overwhelming at 1st, but there is no substitute for spending time behind
the actual panel. It's a lot cheaper ( and safer) to spend the time on
the ground in a SIM/Demo mode than burning avgas. (I would suggest you
wire an alternate DC power source for these hours because you can
readily drain the battery/s. For those of you who are still building, I
would STRONGLY recommend powering up your panel along with the GPS,
AHARS, NAV/COMM antennas etc. and spend a lot of time behind it before
you install it into the airframe, I logged over 40 hours in DEMO mode,
with the panel on the kitchen table, and I still had some adjusting when
actually flying.
On the other hand I took a 30,000 hour airline friend for a ride Fri.
and he had no trouble adapting to my panel.

Jay , what part of Maine are you located in. We are just a little farther up in Nova Scotia. We are hopefully going to get airborne this summer. We ran into a big problem with our painter due to a long illness. We realized he would be out for quite some time but received information on Saturday that he will not be returning to painting. With that said we found a very reputable local car paint shop that is experiencing a little slow period and wants our wings this week. Fuselage is back in my hangar finished but everything else needs some paint.
