Bing 54 flooding only 1 cylinder - where is the dirt lodged?

Well, I installed some new fuel line cause my old black rubber was
getting 'old'. Engine was dialed in PERFECTLY before this. Must have
dislodged some crap in the process.....

Now, one cylinder at idle generates almost no reading on my EGT
yet the other cylinder is at 900 to 1000 at idle. I immediately shut down
and found wet spark plugs in that one cylinder only. After drying the plugs I
checked again at 4000rpm, and everything runs pretty well, so it looks like it's 'idle' issues.
(and no, mag check had no effect.)

So, I did the obvious: I pulled all the jets and checked them
for junk. Found a little bit of junk, cleaned it good and carefully,
and replaced all the jets back in the carb. Even pulled the mixture needle and checked it plus the float valve, got em all clean, but STILL SAME SYMPTOMS!

What have I missed? What spot are "out of sight" that are hard to clean that would create this scenario? Any hidden orifice or pathway? And of course, the obvious question, how do I clean it out safely and get back to running?

Thanks guys...
~Wild

Have you thought about a sticking valve? And is the spark getting to that
cylinder ?

Well do you mean 'float valve'? Remember, the engine was running perfect just the day prior to my swapping out the rubber hoses - it's about 99% sure and obstruction in my book.

Yes. And verify the spark.

Bob.

Wet plugs doesn't seem to fit with the problem being an obstruction in one of the carb circuits. Check to be sure the enricher plunger (choke) is seating properly on the wet cylinder's carb.

Tom Jones was correct - for some reason it was NOT dirt - I just
haven't utilized the choke enough to realize it was intermittently
hanging open. I apparently flipped it on to get her running after
all my fuel lines were replaced (empty) in hopes it would pull
the fuel in faster to my empty fuel system. The lever-style
choke handle isnt' returning. I'll reassemble my carb and verify
before I go chasing it. If anyone has seen these carb cables
hang up, please let me know how you suggest resolving it...
do I open and lubricate the cables, or is there a spring somewhere
inside the choke handle or ??

Thanks all!

On the Bing 54 carbs there is a spring in the enricher plunger but if the cable is binding it needs to be lubricated or replaced. You can purchase a cable lubrication device at bicycle, mototcycle shops or the aircraft supply houses. I've found that lubing the cables annually before they start binding extends their operating life a long time but once they start binding its time to replace them.

I've found that a spray with WD-40 on the cable you can see and a rag soaked
in WD-40 run along the part of the cable you can't spray will loosen up a
binding cable instantly. So I do that a couple of times a year. Haven't
had to replace a cable since new - 1993.

Seems like this always starts a fight when i say this, so I'll just say it and duck out Wink

Most cables that use the teflon housing are designed not to be lubricated and in fact lubricating them causes more problems than leaving them dry.

The general rule of thumb is like Thom said, once they start binding it's pretty much time to replace them.

You can temporarily use a worn/binding cable by spraying some silicone lube into it with the appropriate oiler (like the ones from a bike shop, etc), I wouldn't use anything other than silicone lube because heavier oils can thicken up and inhibit the cable. But it's usually not a good idea to lubricate a cable that's already in good condition to begin with.

But here I'm thinking of the typical throttle cable we use, there are probably other types that are designed to require lubrication (so best to check on this with the cable you use).

We have had problems a couple of times with sticky choke cables. They
were cured easily by spraying Rust-Check (a thin red-coloured oil in a
spray can) into the ends of the cables. The oil seems to be sucked in by
capillary action. Work the choke lever in and out a few times. End of
problem. Rust-Check is sold in Canada at Canadian Tire, but is probably
an American product (my can is at the airport!).

Unfortunately it wasn't my choke after all. It's still running rich somehow. The float needle looks good, the enrichening circuit is not it (it's sealed tight after all even tho it was a little weak but the springs are better now so that's not it).

I have inspected the mixture screw and have cleaned out that hole with compressed air. What other places can dirt hide to cause a rich mixture? What am I missing?

Go to http://www.bingcarburetor.com/manual.html and buy their Bing Carburetor manual for $10 including shipping which covers the simple 54 and the more complex 64 and other CV carbs. With this you can easily do a Bing carb tear down, inspection and cleaning. Replace those seals, o-rings and gaskets etc. that show wear or deterioration of any kind then put it back together. It is very easy to do on a Bing 54, and not much more involved on a BIng 64 (912 engines) or 94 (Jabiru engines). When it comes to buying the replacement parts, you can buy them from LEAF or CPS or Lockwood cheaper than directly from BIng.

If that does not solve the problem it is not the carb. Then you can start looking elsewhere.
