It was taking a long time to warm my 912 oil temps on cold days and the temps were staying below the recommended levels. I was going to put in an oil radiator bypass thermostat, but after purchasing the unit I realized it required putting in a lot of extra pluming, thus increasing the chances of a failure. Instead, I built a simple shutter to reduce airflow through the radiator (see pics below). The oil changes temperature almost immediately when opening or closing this shutter. There is a 20-degree difference within a minute or so.
I have the old style engine mount and this shutter may not fit with the new mount.
Les

Great idea Les! I have been playing around with a vane type of arrangement but yours looks better. Thank you! Right now I've been using Mexican chrome (duct tape) up here in cold ND, but with days getting warmer a cockpit adjustable thing is better. Same reason why I didn't put on the thermostat.

I tried both the Permacool and Thermostasis oil thermostats, with no appreciable results from either......  Certainly not worth all the extra hoses and hose clamps holding in hot oil.....  A shutter like yours looks like the way to go. JG

Les
Understand the shutter works well for warmup...can you precisely control the temp in flight? I built a vane type shutter and couldn't get it to work as designed. I'm tired of fooling around with tape and having to land enroute to adjust it as temps warmup...
Thanks
Joe

I can hold the shutter anywhere from right against the oil heater (0-degree) to about 75-degrees away. In flight the only testing I did was at the two extremes, 0 and 75-dregrees, and noticed that the oil temps changed about 20-degrees F on a 50F day.

Les, could you forward the pics of the oil cooler baffle to me? I could not open them.
