Lynn,
I bought my aircraft and did not build it. It came with the gascolator. Its position on the firewall is similar to most early production aircraft (albeit in a smaller area)
My header tank has the fuel outlet at the very bottom. The fuel line to the engine then T's off the short stub out of the bottom of the tank. The sampling drain is at the bottom of the T.
I guess I could remove the gascolator on my firewall but don't see any reason to. It contains one more filter prior to the fuel pump.

You wouldn't have any reason to remove it, but it sounded like it was
awfully close to the muffler.
