Hi,
I think that the photograph is one I took of my monowheel brake installation. The hose actually came from France but is readily available from a good hydraulic parts merchant in the UK, as is the banjo coupling.

Regards,
Mike

Mike,
You wouldn't happen to have the specs for that fitting would you?
I'm working on my brakes and that fitting would be perfect.

Michel,

The hose came from MDO Aircraft when I bought their stick mounted hand brake caliper.  (See attachment)  I think M. Bastien of MDO Aircraft is based in Biarritz.  I do know that some of our colleagues on this site have had trouble contacting him.  A French person in France may have better luck.

Bob,

I’ll see if I can find the details of the banjo fitting. I might have to go back to the shop on Monday.

Regards,

Mike.

Mike and all,

Although I've never met Mr Bastien, I've had the opportunity to ring him
about his master cylinder.
I get the impression that communication with potential customers would
be better if their initial message was in French, so if some of you
gentlemen were kind enough to provide an example message, I'd be happy
to translate it into French to help facilitate contact with Mr Bastien.
Like with many of my fellow countrymen, the response to a message in
French might prove considerably quicker.

Best regards,

Mike & Michel,

I'm in the process of converting to the stick mounted hand brake from MDO. The control column mounted master cylinder is beautifully made. Unfortunately, M. Bastien provided a caliper fitting that consisted of an AN9186 Nipple (Flared Tube to Pipe Thread) to replace the existing 90 degree fitting and then put a 90 degree AN hose end fitting on the end of the hose. See pic:

The AN fitting is NPT (National Pipe Thread), which is a tapered thread. The 90 degree fitting that came off the caliper was a straight thread so the AN fitting only goes in about 2 threads and quits. That's not really acceptable. A banjo hose end like yours, Mike, would be perfect but I can't find one over here on this side of the pond.
Tomorrow, I'll be posting more pics on my build site showing how the hose end of the banjo should be configured as it's not a (U.S.) typical 37 degree AN type fitting.
If there's anyone out there in Europe or the U.K. that can find the correct fitting, I'd sure be glad to pay for it as well as postage to send it to me.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Bob,

You can tap it to pipe thread, as I did after talking to Terry and Dave (N135TD). You cut the tip of tap off so it won't bottom out. So you are cutting the top part of the threads wider to accept "our" pipe thread.

But the banjo fitting looks very nice too...

No need to “modify” a tap, just get the correct tap for the job. There are three basic taps, taper (7 to 10 chamfered threads), plug (3 to 5) and bottoming (1 to 2). When tapping into a blind hole the bottoming tap is preferred if you want threads almost to the bottom (duh!). It is not as easy to get a bottoming tap started by hand, and the chips tend to get jammed into the bottom of the hole so it may take a few “ins and outs” to get the job done.

Mike,

OK, I see what you have there. Yes, the same banjo parts are available here on this side of the pond (http://www.anplumbing.com).
I had hoped that what you used was a banjo hose end. Now that I know what you did, I need to locate a proper female AN flared fitting hose end to replace the 90 degree hose end provided. Perhaps I can go to anplumbing.com and find the hose end as they have the banjo, bolt and washers.

Thanks muchly for your help,
Bob Borger

PS - That also means that I can use the same sort of banjo setup on the bottom of the Europa supplied hand master cylinder.
That provides interesting opportunities.

Mike,

Thanks for the information. I have placed an order through Merlin as the same hose-end banjo does not seem to be available here in the U.S.
I have ordered some other bits from a California distributor which may allow me to keep the original Europa hand brake for the co-pilot use should it become necessary. We'll see how it all works out when all the bits have arrived.
Thanks very much,

Mike, et al,

After following and just now reviewing this thread, I find I'm not clear as to just what the issues are with the stock Europa XS mono brake, apart from the substitution of a stick-mounted motorcycle-type hand grip for the stock, tunnel-mounted, hand brake/master cylinder.
I do understand the desirability of having 2 right hands during run-up with the stock setup, and consequently, I fashioned a detent for the hand brake as shown in the attached photo. Whether or not the detent will hold the brake full-on during runup is not known, but for the time being I'm hoping it will serve while I progress w/ other more challenging aspects of my build.
So here's a question...If one were to retain the stock XS mono hand brake lever and master cylinder, are there issues with the kit-supplied hydraulic line and its connection to the wheel mounted brake assembly which warrant substitution using the recently posted banjo fittings?

I went to the hydraulic store to day, fortunately he had a computer record of what I bought last year.

Hi Fred,

Ya, the stock factory configuration simply requires too many hands for my complete comfort. It works, but the right hand can be quite busy between the throttle and brake.
There's a very fine line on the throttle friction between difficult to operate and having the throttle spring slowly slip the throttle forward. And it isn't the easiest thing to adjust that friction either.
Then there's the lack of a parking brake to hold things during run-up. Hold the stick in your knees, the brake in the right hand and reach across with the left to set the throttle. The one-armed paper hanger comes to mind.
The stick mounted master solves all those problems easily.
There are no issues on the brake end of things if you stick with the stock setup. The issue arises when you want to switch out to the stick mounted brake. All the brake fittings are straight threads not pipe threads so AN816 nipple adaptors from NPT to Flared Tube don't work. But a nice banjo fitting with banjo bolt work just jim dandy.
I'll be posting a few pics from my trials and tribulations as soon as I send this .
Hope this helps,
Bob Borger

Have you considered the Matco parking brake valve? I was told of it during the build by others, and am very pleased with the way it functions. It holds the brake on for days. I can do a full power runnup and it holds, no hands! I hold the stick between the knees so the left hand can operate the mag switches.
Will you also have the factory brake master which can be operated from the right seat?

Bob

It used to be said that you have a tethered wedge to drop into the space vacated when you apply the brake and this will hold the pressure.

Bob,

With regard to fitting the MDO supplied hose to the banjo coupling.  Everything you need to secure the hose to the coupling comes with the coupling.

Mike
Mike,  OK, I see what you have there. Thanks muchly for your help, Bob Borger [b]
