I did a stupid thing today and now I need a new blade for my IVO ground adjustable prop, or a new three blade 60" three blade adjustable prop. Don't ask what I did as I am too embarrassed to tell the story. Pete

Pete,

One of the unwritten rules on this list is you have to fess up to stupid acts, not because anyone wants to laugh at you but because we are all guilty of stupid acts.

Sometimes we learn from others errors of judgement or lapse in thinking. That is why we are here.

If you look back a few years you'll read about how I stupidly crashed my early FS.... STUPID STUPID STUPID ME. We are all guilty so just let us know what you did so you can be a bona fide member of the the stupid kolb drivers ASSociation.

Thom,

I read a bit, and one of the things I came across was a pessimistic view of
piloting. Basically it espoused that no flight was error free. The trick
was to recognize the errors and to correct them before physical damage took
place.

Jack,
You are correct, of course. I didn't have time to correct my obvious error before the inevitable consequences of the error took place. Had I another 5 seconds or so, I could probably have recovered from the error.

I will not commit that particular error again, at least not under those circumstances. It was an expensive and somewhat painful lesson, but one that is indelibly recorded in my psyche. On the bright side, it could have been worse.

For those who don't recall, I stalled the FS a couple of feet above the runway. That in itself would not have been too bad, but the left main gear "landed" in a deep pot-hole breaking off the axle weldment. The end of the gear leg dug in, and over I went inverted. Much damage to airframe and some to my shins.

OK I will fess up. The Dumb thing I did was while working on the 447 Rotax that was giving me trouble, I had removed the Fire Fly from the trailer/hanger, un-folded the wings, removed the right wing. DSH { that means dumb shit Haggerty} left the left wing hanging on the universal joint connector aft of the wing, with the leading edge of the wing laying prone on the ground. DSH thought it would not be sucked into the prop when the engine started. Well it did get sucked into the prop and now I have to mortgage the house to pay for the damages. All that DSH had to do was remove one bolt holding the wing on, place the wing out of harms way, and every thing would have been fine. Pete [No I am not a blond].

Don't feel too bad, I have been a member of this ASSociation since 97 and have even reupped twice more. Thankfully not for the same reasons, but humbling none the less.

PeteLOTS of us (most?) have done dumb things. And survived; somehow.
No shame, no regrets, but consider it a survivable learning experience.
I'm glad that blondes don't get yet one more downer!
Thank you for your honesty.
Fair winds,
