Hi Builders,
I'm actually building a 750, but that list isn't as active as this one is. My problem is I let a 2x4 drop on my nose skin sheet which put a nice indention in it. The sheet is not installed, so I can work both sides.
I've been told a metal spoon wrapped in tape is used to smooth out the sheets, and I've done that before on some minor dings. I may not be able to get all of this one out, but any advice on techniques will be appreciated!

Hi Jimmy:
After you get as much as you can with the "spoon" technique try heating the
area up around the dent, including the dent, and then using dry ice, rubbing
it across the dent, will sometimes shrink the metal enough to remove the
"Soft" dents. Those are dents without sharp protruding edges.
I hate it what some dumb that that happens. I think we have all been there
at one time or another.

What temp would you recommend and are there any issues with the factory
tempering of the AL?

I hit a small bird with the slats off my wing and dented in a leading edge.
Anyone have any ideas? I might try the heating/dry ice cooling thing. It
wouldn't do any harm I guess. I always wonder if heavier aluminum on the
leading edge might help to prevent some of those dings. After all, we are
not flying at mach speeds. Still, more weight.....

Jimmy,
I once ordered a new panel for a Piper aircraft that arrived with a large bend and dent. I went to a old car restoration shop that did custom hot rod work and asked them if they could help me out. The owner looked at the piece and said no problem. We went to the back of his shop where he had a big English Wheel. He proceeded to fix the panel like new. It took him all of about 3 minuets and did not charge me anything.

When I ran a slat into the barn door I couldn't get the entire dent out. The
more I worked at it the worse it looked. Rather than replace the slat I
simply put a rectangular patch of .016 skin over the dent with a few rivets.
It looks a lot better than the dent did.

Builders,
I appreciate the tips. I spoke with a local who also suggested the moderate heating/ice technique. If I had to ding something, I picked a good spot as it's on the nose skin and will be hidden by the slats.
Ample space is a luxury when building. It's easy to damage things when you're out of room. I'll be moving my completed wing to the hanger asap.

I used a little heat & spooned the dent out a bit more, then 3 or 4 more heat/ice cycles, and got most of the "bubble" out. Since it's on the leading edge the bubble will flatten out (I free-formed the sheet to it's eventual shape to check this) and the best news is the location is under the slat so that helps as well. Thanks again for the tips.
