Thing is Ed, the alcohol is also the octane booster. If you don't have the alcohol (or some other chemical) the octane might be too low for some of our engines. Case in point is my ongoing glitch of sporadic dieseling on shutdown. Sometimes my engine will rotate 3 or more revolutions backwards at shutdown. This is not that big of a deal with a Cont/Lyc but it is with a 912 ! I have done the valve tappet check about 10 times (haven't found any air in the lifters yet) I think I will just put Velcro on the valve covers so I can get them off easy.
Last week as an example, I got a fresh batch of theoretically no ethanol premium. It did not have alcohol as I tested for it however, I had no way to test for octane, Any way I put it in my plane and on shutdown here came the dieseling . I added Lucas Octane booster to that same batch of fuel in my tanks and all dieseling stopped on subsequent shutdowns. I am suspecting that the load of fuel was regular and the octane booster was not added at the rack. Don't know though.
I have even had my gearbox apart for reshim/respring and to check the 'dogs' for unreasonable wear. The box was fine and clean as a pin. I have seen pictures of the deposits from long time avgas usage on the gears, etc.Mine looked like new so I would rather continue with Rotax recommended auto fuel but it has been a challenge. I really don't like being a "test pilot' for the right fuel combination.
Rotax says "no additives" but if I don't I have problems with this lousy fuel we have to use! Wonder what the octane booster is doing to the Kreem in my tanks? I have filters like Lynn does and so far so good.
Check out fueltestkit.com for everything you wanted to know about ethanol in fuel. It is a very good site!
Sorry for being so long winded but it is early Sunday morning, raining, wife is sleeping, and the coffee is good! Almost a whole pot gone. Soon it will be spring and I will go to my mountain cabin in NC and whip thru the mountains in my TR3 !
