I'm about to start my upgrade kit but one thing I'm interested in asking, has anyone finished the upgrade kit with wing lockers in their wings? I can see where the new extrusion is a bit wider than the original angle used. Won't there be a noticeable gap between the locker hinges and the nose skin?
Just wondering and thanks for any responses.

Larry,
I have completed the upgrade on my 601XL that had been flying with wing lockers. I have the hinge facing up, as my plans said, and there was absolutely no difference in fit, pre or post upgrade. People who reversed their hinge around to make the flat side up have to do something else to account for the wider extrusion. Maybe they can chime in here.
Good luck,

I set my hinge on top of the new angle which caused a slight bump in the
skin at each end of the hinge but other than that works fine but mine was
installed hinge pin up to start with. David Coberly

I just received my upgrade kit and am also wondering about the wing lockers. I originally installed them with the hinge up, but used shims under the spar angle and between the lid and the hinge so it wouldn't protrude upwards so much.
Am I correct that the mod calls for sliding the hinge between the wing skin and the new angle? Anybody find another way that doesn't involve trimming the existing doors?

Larry,
I installed the hinge up and removed the shims that were originally used.
Fits fine.

I just flipped the hinge over, pin up and it works just fine. Would have needed a 3"wide hinge to leave the pin down. No trimming of the door was necessary and just re-used the same hinge with new rivet holes transferred from the nose skin.

Looking for some advice / opinions / comments, and suggestions.
I’m currently scratch building a 601XLb. I’m at the stage where I need to make a decision whether to build the wing lockers or not.
For those of you that already have wing lockers in your 601s, I’m curious as to whether they are working as planned. Are they useful? Do you use them on regular bases? Are they acquired awkward to get into? Are there any issues with items inside getting wet? Any In-flight problems? Etc.
Thanks in advance.

Dwayne,
They were somewhat of a pain to install but I'm glad I did but you need
to add extra fasteners around the lid and extra L angles under the lid
for support to keep the lid from raising during flight also things will
get wet so you will have to put things you don't want to get wet in
water tight storage such as zip lock bags.

David, thanks for the advice. Our EAA 245 president gave me very similar advice this morning. He has an older 601HD, but the same issues were raised, wet, extra L angles and fasteners.
I wish there was a better or different way to fasten them closed. Perhaps something that doesn’t require a screwdriver. I guess the other option is to not use them frequently, or carry items you seldom need access to, i.e. survival gear….I have some thinking to do.

They are cool indeed, but obscenely expensive.
AS&S has them in their catalog for $121
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/ap/latches.html
The trick is to find "new surplus", which I did manage to do.
Airparts Inc has them for $20, but they are for the wrong material thickness.
You need to learn the anatomy of these gadgets: they must fit the material you are working with; also the version that has a travel limited to 90 deg. is better, or it will hit the material around it and make a dent.
http://www.airpartsinc.com/products/flush-latch-hartwell.htm
There is also a version with a round button, which is much easier to install, but I never found them for a reasonable price.
This site has them for $48. Five or 7 per door... do the math...
https://www.circletracksupply.com/product.php?productid=2026
I believe I posted some information on the list a while back.
If you can't find it, send me a note and I'll gather the info for you (I'm about to crash, it's almost midnight here in Montreal).
Cheers
