G'Day All,
I removed the smoke nozzles from the 18 T to replace with smoke nozzles with a smaller hole to try and get a little bit more duration with Smoke on.
The right hand nozzle was clean and free of any deposits.
The left nozzle had to be pried out of the exhaust as it was deposited with very light grey carbon which may indicate lean burn.
Right hand exhaust good colour, left exhaust lots of very light grey carbon.
Can anyone please explain this?
I have attached photo to show smoke. It really pumps it out.
Thanks and cheers,
Chris.

WAG here. Could it be that the cylinders on the left side are further from the carburetor in relation to the rotation of the super charger?
I've never thought to look at this before.

It is possible it is a lean burn. Did you pull the plugs and compare left to right? You may want to remove each of the exhaust sections and look in the individual tubes to see if one cylinder is more gray than the other. Be sure to check each intake gland nut and intake collar for security. They must be completely tight. It is also possible one of the intake gland nut seals is deteriorated or damaged which would permit air to be sucked in and lean that particular cylinder. Just my 2 cents.

Don't run me up the flagpole and disc me please, but could this be LEAD and not carbon? The dynamics of airflow on the Russian aircraft impacts the evacuation of the exhaust and the velocity that ends up exiting the tubes. Lead is in a gas state as is leaves the cylinder and will revert back to a solid as soon as it sees enough of a temperature shift. It might just be possible that all you are seeing is normal lead precipitation due to a slighter cooler exhaust on one side more than the other. Lead is normally grey in when it reverts back to a solid from the exhaust.
This is just a pure wild ass guess. But if the engine has time on it, is running properly, and has good compression, I would not get too upset about this. If you want to get serious, get a borescope and look inside the cylinders. Look very carefully at the exhaust valve. If the engine is running lean on one cylinder or more, you'll see it. But again my WAG is that this is nothing to worry about.
Flame retardant suit now in place.
