When I bought my Zodiac 601 HDS from the builder, he mentioned to me the concept of
"effective gross weight". I think he mentioned that it was 1050 pounds. We had a lot of
other things to talk about so I did not get back to the topic to ask more about it.
I notice that on the Zenith website, that even though the gross weignt for the HDS is
listed at 1200 pounds, the figures for stall speed and climb are listed using 1050 pounds.
Does anyone know more about this subject?
Regards,
Damien

I can't recall for sure, but I think it went something like this:

Back in the day the orignal 601 was only designed for 1058 lbs, sometimes rounded off to 1050 lbs. I think the Canadian Advanced Ultralight class was then also only 1058 max (480kg) before later going up. As Zenair upped the strength of the HD to match the new 1200 limit, and later built the HDS for 1200 lbs as well, they just kept on using 1050 as an old standard for quoting performance. E.g., even in the well-known Popular Mechanics article of 1997, for the HDS they stated 1200 gross, but showed performance for "800 lbs (Solo)" and "1050 lbs (Dual)".

So for the HDS I don't think there's any reason to think of 1050 as any sort of physical limit.
