Thought I'd share some pictures I took showing what an Olfa Knife does to aluminum.

That's crazy. Where did you make the magnified images?

Larry,

Can't seem to spend my entire work day working...

I'm materials engineer and use electron microscopes on a regular basis. It's good practice for me to look at "non-routine" things from time to time - just to keep the skills sharp.

Regards,
Ben

Ben,

Let us see what that edge looks like after working the edge with a vixen file, then again after all the burrs are removed.

Thanks,

There's some serious opportunity for learning here.

Would be interesting to see the differences between the various deburring techniques.

I can't help but to wonder what a reamed spar bolt hole would look like under extreme magnification. Or the contents of an oil filter after first engine startup. Or is Nuvite really the best polishing stuff.

The possibilities would be endless....

Any ideas on how much a good electron microscope costs? I wonder if a guy could build one?

Maybe I can make a small contribution here: I spent much of my past life using an assortment of light and electron microscopes to help solve problems. While scanning electron microscopy is a powerful tool (as Ben so beautifully demonstrates) my favorite instrument has always been the simple stereomicroscope. Like SEM, these are used to study the surface of things. They have a large working distance and require no sample preparation. You can get a high quality used one or a low quality new one for a few hundred dollars. At home, mine gets used for removing splinters and what not. In the shop, I have used it to help make personal judgements on some of the issues we obsess about.

At my hanger, I use it to examine oil filters from my certificated ship. The good folks at Sacramento Sky Ranch provide good counsel on simple physical and chemical tests one can use to help identify unknown particles. (link below).

If you have kids around, the stereomicroscope is great for motivating them about science. Basically anything examined under a stereomicroscope is amusing, but biological stuff is best. For man made things, the closer you look, the more ragged it appears. For anything biological, the closer you look, the more wondrous it becomes.

Even cheaper and easier, I sometimes find that questions can be resolved by examination with cheap reading glasses with crazy high diopter. Helps my welding as well. Sorry for rambling.

Cheers,
Bill
