Do we need to make a thin aluminum heat shield to protect the firewall blanket from the muffler heat on a 912 installation in a model IV?

If so, how much of the lower firewall does it need to cover?

thanks for the help,

Clem

I have a model III with a 912, and have about 200 hours on it. I noticed that the blanket was getting a little discolored behind the exhaust, and it started getting brittle.

I decided to do exactly what you asked about. I cut and shaped some aluminum to cover the blanket right behind the exhaust. The only places that needed it on my installation was for the exhaust lines from the back cylinders to the muffler. I don't know if it is really needed or not, but I don't get as many questions from friends looking things over, and besides, it makes me feel better.

Clem,
I have an aluminum exhaust shield on mine also. I too found the area where there was no shield did get scorched. If you don't have your engine mounted yet, you could form a nice alum/ss piece to fit the lower firewall. That fabric material does flake and crack next to the muffler..

If you have stainless exhaust pipes and muffler. You could use header wrap and take care of the problem. Easy and controls radiated heat much better. You can pick up a roll at most automotive stores. They claim it cuts down up to 70% heat. I can put my hand on my exhaust after flying. So that means that much less heat under the cowl and radiated heat to hoses and wires. It has been on there since Jan. 2008. Never any issues and a lot of our fleet followed along and has had no issues.
