It is probably not the shock absorber that you here but the springs themselves.. That absorber should last forever since it is for a car which sees a little more action than an airplane will ever see. If you really need to take it apart just remove the top nut and get the tail down to allow the threaded area clear the upper bracket. remove the rubber donut and pull the upper tube off to expose the springs.. Try greasing the springs which rub on the tube, you will see the shock and can move it up and down to see if it is good.

Sorry to hear the damage, but you are OK which is the important thing. Use the round tube as Rich said and make a fiberglass fairing for it. You can make the fairing to blend into the nose wheel pant. That is what we did for my airplane and it looks very good. I posted pics on my website:

Rich, How do you get the shock absorber out of the nose assembly on order to check it. Mine squeaks a LOT as I taxi and it might need replacement.

We later swiched to a round tube of 4130. If you can get some 2inch .095 wall tube you could weld that in. The airfoit tube requires stiffiners and though better looking was not as strong as the round tube. |You cand build a fairing onto the tube with glass and foam.

G'Day guys,
Recently swapped out the Subaru engine (158hp ) for a Zero time 195hp Subaru in my KIS TRI ... Have had over Temp Oil pressure probs ...but was thinking the engine was running in ok as Oil Temp were coming down ..
However yesterday during another short test flt the Oil Pressure dropped ..and after an engine surge the engine quit dead ..
Landed 50mtr short of the Runway ...Damage is ..one smashed Prop Blade and one Nose Gear leg ..
So LOOKING to ask if anyone can give me a lead to a replacement nose gear Leg ..It has the Streamlined steel leg ... Even a lead onto the Streamlined profile steel supply would be great as i could remake the leg if i had a piece of the Streamlined Steel Stock .
Any help would be great

It is possible that it is due to lack of grease between the outer (upper) tube and inner (lower) one.
You can visually check these surfaces without much troubles. If the lower tube is dry with no grease on it - this is the case.
In my plane I attached greasing ports, one on the left and one on the right of the outer tube.
This way I can put the grease there without any heroic actions.
In your case I would recommend to try to grease the tubes without removal of the gear from the plane.
Load the rear of the plane with sand bags, with another sandbag on the floor below, until the tail goes all the way down.
Having the tail down you have the front gear fully extended, i.e. the springs push the lower part out, and a big part of the lower tube is exposed. Now you can coat it with a decent dense grease for hard working parts, preferably with molybdenum sulphide.
When you put the plane back on the front gear that grease will get carried inside between the tubes. That should solve the problem.
Removing the front wheel and especially installing it back is a real pain.
I did it by loading the rear horizontal control surface with sand bags. Disconnect the upper nut holding the top of the landing gear as described by Rich. Disconnect the rocker holding it at the bottom, and the whole thing should be able to be removed downway.
Putting it back is much harder. Getting the threaded top of the shock absorber rod through the bracket is a real pain because it just slides inside the assembly even with a very little force of friction while pushing it in. To avoid it you have to compress the springs. I welded short strong ears to the upper and the lower tubes, compressed the assembly, wrapped a heavy steel wire around the ears to hold it compressed, and it was easy to install. After installation you just cut and remove the wire.
I do not know if the need for that pre compressing was caused by my wrong installation, or if it is a standard thing, anyway, be careful because you might get into a troublesome project.
