How would you react to a Jabiru 2200 with these characteristics:
- Build in 95 (sn #60)
- 125h TT
- NEW cylinders & pistons in 2004 (larger fins)
- NEW conrods in 2008, including replacement of all seals & gaskets in the low end
Such an engine is past the time-based TBO. Is it equivalent (value-wise) to a run-out core?? Or is it closer to a 2004 engine with 125 TT??

Engine's on a plane, actually. I would not plan on doing anything to it - it's on a plane and flying. Just wondering if there is some metric or standard to gauge engines that are beyond time TBO like this one. I don't think there is - just a case by case thing.

Compression and leak down tests won't tell you everything but they are one measure of ring and valve wear..

I appreciate it, but it's not the health of the top-end I have any concern over. I'm sure the compressions are fine. It's the low-end I think *might* be a concern.
My last mechanic would tell me at least for Lycs that when the engine was past it's time TBO (10 years), it should be valued as needing a major.
Other than that there is the issue that the early jabs had many problems. What the previous answer was trying to do, in fact, in replacing the rods & jugs was eliminate the common problems. I was wondering if there might be others I wasn't aware of. I know they made many changes to those early engines.
Thanks again for the replies.

If I were you, I'd ask this question on the Matronics List for Jabiru
engines....jabiruengine-list(at)matronics.com...., or the Yahoo group
whose address is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/jabiruengines/
There are more knowledgeable people in a group dedicated to a
specific subject, this one being Jabiru engines, and you might even
get an answer from one of the two Jabiru dealers in the United
States. No offense intended to the fine Kitfox folks, but they tend
to be Rotax knowledgeable, and not so much on the Jabirus. Or just
email Pete Krotje at: pete(at)usjabiru.com
And even as brilliant as I am, I wouldn't know how to answer your
question. : )

Paul,
As mentioned earlier, you pay your money you take your chances. I have run many LYc/Cont older engines without a problem. My current Rotax is about 15 years old with only 250 hours. I have no intention of overhauling it on time alone. I religiously do oil sampling/filter checks and they have all been clean. I recently pulled the gearbox for bellville washer replacement and the gears, etc were clean as a pin with no corrosion.
The one area I would be concerned about in any older engine is the cam. If it sits with little use,and depending on where it resides in the engine, it can loose lube, rust, pit and then you can wipe your followers as well as cam lobes. I just saw the internals of a Lyc that happened to last week. Not pretty. The guy was trying to get a prop balance but the crank vibration /movement wouldn't cooperate thus the investigation and teardown. There was a lot of metal in the pan. I asked the owner if he had been oil sampling and he had not,nor checked the screen. He was lucky he decided to balance the prop and this major problem was found ...on the ground. Two of the cam lobes were almost a perfect circle. He wondered about the low compression. So there you go.
I am not familiar with the Jab so cannot tell you anything about it but FOR ME on my experimental, I would not be so quick to overhaul on time alone. Some more investigation with a Jab expert would be in order.
Just my two cents Dick Maddux

There is an interesting article in the January EAA Sport Aviation Magazine on TBO and how the airlines have gotten away from this as a basis for maintenance based on statistical data.
