Has anyone customized this top window to allow more headroom and seat cushioning ? I have seen few pictures of this window being bowed and wondered if there were any other customized or heat formed top windows out there. I am long in the torso and with very little seat cushioning for head clearance, It feels as though I'm sitting in a forty gallon trash can. The diagonal tube would then be the only obstruction for tall passengers, unless someone has modified this tube also. Pictures ??
Thanks, Don

Don. I started building from plans in 1991. Hope to be finished Late summer this year. My reason for mentioning this? In 19 years I have not heard of this top window being modified in any way. Maybe someone else has...Geoff

Hi Don,
I'm 6'2" and 205 lbs. I heated the flaberon rod that is under the pilot seat and made a slight bow to it allowing the seatpan to conform to the new curve. Then I lowered the seatpan several inches. I still have several inches of head room left with a dense cushion that is about 1.5 inches thick. Jim

IIRC, Mark Townsend mentioned this as one of the mods to make for a bigger guy to fly the 701 (the others being lowering the seat pan and moving the rudder pedals forward).
The 750 has this type of top window that is more bubble than flat. It is one of the reasons why there seems to be such a vast amount of additional headroom in the 750, as opposed to the 701.
If I build a 701, I will definitely do the same.

Hello all;
The 701 top window is bowed. The bow is controlled by the curve of the Diagonal Doubler 7F12-3. This part is crimped to curve it them trimmed and fitted to the diagonal tube of the cabin frame. Dimensions and details are shown on sheet 7-F-12. Hope this helps.

This is not mine, but it has or is being done. My take is for more lift rather thin head room. But to each their own. |

Hi Kevin, I was thinking along the same lines, more head room and to carry the curvature of the windshield through the top panel. My concerns were to not disrupt the prop blast to the tail too much and possibly add more to the wing area. Thanks for the picture
