I usually fly low between 1000 and 2500 ft. AGL. But the other day I wanted to see what my Jabiru 2200 powered CH 701 could do. I climbed to 10,000 ft. (11,300 density altitude), final climb rate at 10K was 200 to 300 ft/min. Engine was smooth all the way and temps were good. Sure can see a long way from up there.

Thanks for the info Chuck. Since I live at 9,100' the majority of my flying will be around 10.5 and above. Not a whole lot of fliers up at this altitude, so I am having a hard time trying to find which engine would work best.

Hi Keith;
 I live at 7200 feet and Stan Chalgren in Evergreen CO is even higher. We are both using the Jabiru 3300.

Hi John,
I knew that you were using the 3300, but I didn't know what Stan was using in his 701.

I still need to get out to Elbert sometime soon, to see your progress.

Chuck. Stoppit. That’s too high. You could get stuck up there.

I live in Southern AZ where the density altitude gets quite high. I have a Rotax 100 HP engine which handles the altitude well. What I noticed about the 701 is at about 9500 MSL the angle of attack gets quite pronounced. I think at that point the air starts going through the slats which causes quite a drag. My 701 handles the altitude better with the slats removed and vortex generators instead of slats, considerably less angle of attack up there..

Ron

I read earlier threads on the slats vs. vgs and was wondering. Have you
removed the slat brackets or did you not build them when you were building
your wings?
