I recently bought a flying Kitfox IV XL and am considering changing out the Rotax 503 for a Great Plains 2300cc (76-80hp) direct drive VW engine. Would anyone who has had experience with a VW engine in a Kitfox please tell me if this is a good idea or not. I'm concerned how I will address any CG problems, and any other problems I might not have thought of.......Great Plains makes a firewall forward kit including engine mount and a new cowling. I've only owned my airplane for 6 months and really feel a need for more horsepower. The 503 is just 50hp. I am also brand new to this site having had Debra McBean direct me here. Looking for all the help I can get!

I 7m just getting ready to start my flight testing program with a Great Plains 2276 cc 6nbsp;direct drive engine with the Great Plains engine mount and exhaust E 6nbsp; I like the engine so far and think it will be a good match for the airframe E 6nbsp; My empty weight came in at 695 pounds in the middle of the envelope with my battery (13 lb PC 680) in the tail E 6nbsp; Don 7t have any performance numbers yet but am looking forward to doing some flight testing tomorrow E
Steve Bennett at Great Plains is the guru for VW 6nbsp;aircraft engines E 6nbsp; Very dry and matter of fact on the phone but he has been my constant source for advice on the installation without complaint E 6nbsp;
Email me off the list and to exchange phone numbers and I 7ll keep you posted on my progress and give you an idea of what problems you may encounter E

Carl post your numbers for the list as we are all curious.  Mine is about 7-800 fpm solo and bragging to say 500 fpm at 1200lbs.  Course I am the speedster model.  Ron NB Ore

Hello Tim. I wrote to you not long ago. I am currently rebuilding a Model IV Speedster. The 912 I got with it will not be used. I am just about ready to order the Great Plains 2276. How are you doing with yours? I'd like to stay connected with e-mail to share info. and photos. Thanks Tom
