Where does one need to look for (hidden) damage after ground loops with a gear collapse or unusually hard landings in a model IV Kitfox?
With a prop strike on a Rotax 912, have folks found crank shaft damage or gear box damage? If so how does one detect crank damage without engine tear down?

BJ,
After a prop strike on a Rotax 912/914 the gearbox should be removed and sent to an approved repair facility for inspection. While the gearbox is off, check the run out of the crankshaft. As I recall .002 is the limit, but check the Rotax heavy maintenance manual to be sure.

BJ, One thing about powder coating if this one is, is that it makes it difficult to detect cracks so check close. Remove the seat and check the bulkhead/truss that the bungees wrap around for any bent tubing.
Did a wing tip strike the ground with any significant force? If so, stretch a string tight from wing root to tip above each spar to be sure they are still straight.
Remove the wing tip and check the wood structures inside the wing.
Take the wing off and check the spar attach lugs and their welds to the the spar carry through tubes for any damage. Replace the bolt that attaches the rear spar and the pin on the front spar. When you remove the old hardware be sure the bolt/pin and their respective attach lugs are not bent. Does the bolt/pin still slide in and out of the attach lug smoothly?

What kind of gear? Spring? Bush? Stock bungee? With stock gear, beyond the gear itself I'd look for damage in the fuselage at the "bungee bulkhead" Simply running a straight edge across the top of the athwartships bungee bulkhead and across the top of the bottom door sills will tell you if something's moved. Then a straight edge along the fuselage lower stringers where the gear attach to see if they're bent out of shape. If the wing tip hit hard then some triangulation checks off the outboard strut ends to see if the fuselage is bent / twisted. (Of course, this assumes everything was assembled straight in the first place. I'd measure off the strut ends to eliminate the bent wing.)

Post this on the Matronics Rotax site, you'll get a broader return. Also Google, as there have been many 912 prop strikes and I've seen the same question asked elsewhere.
Good luck!
