Can someone tell me the procedure to break in new matco brake pads? I can only find it on the Matco web site which is to taxi 30 to 40 mph and then brake to 5 mph a few times. I don't want to taxi that fast.
Somewhere I read that the procedure on a kitfox is to taxi a certain speed and distance while applying some break pressure but I can't find that now. I seem to get everything but brake information when I search for this.

Breaking from 40 to 5 sounds like a normal landing. So 3 or 4 full stop
landings should do it

Kirk, I was thinking about just normal landings too but I got the impression that the brake pads need to get fairly hot. They would probably be cooled down between landings. They emphasize not to come to a full stop between breaking actions during the procedure also and to release brake pedal pressure as soon as you park after the procedure and wait until the disk is cool to the touch before using them again.
It seems to me the procedure was in my builders manual but I can't find it now so maybe not.

Hi Tom,
You don't have to taxi that fast. You are only trying to heat the pads up to a certain temp. Just taxi 15mph and drag the brakes for about 10-15 minutes. You don't need to stop, just heat them up. After I get done with that little procedure I try a few hard stops. The next 6 or so landings don't baby them use them to stop fairly quickly, but don't try to stop real hard. They will get better and better during the first 6 or so landings. I have mounted and installed at least 40+ Matco brake sets and have never had any issue.
Matco recommends Loctite 567 to seal all you brake application threads. I use it and have never had a leak. I have tried other things in the past and had oozing past the threads. This heating procedure will increase the brake performance by 50%.

Tom
Here is Matco's break in procedure --- I got it from Matco's site.

Question:
Why do my brakes feel spongy or weak?
Answer:
Check to ensure that there is no air in the system. Air can be trapped in
any high spot in the line and often cannot be "pumped" out. Ensure no high
spots during bleeding. The following bleeding procedure may be used:
Check to ensure that your linings have been adequately broken in using a
standard break in procedure. Your lining should produce a shiny transfer
layer if properly conditioned. The following procedure should be adequate to
condition the linings: 1) Apply brake pressure for high throttle static
run-up. Note RPM at creep if any. 2) Perform 2-3 high-speed taxi runs (firm
braking from 30-40 mph to 5 mph) to generate 300-400 degrees at brake pads.
Do not bring aircraft to a complete stop during the taxi runs and also allow
the aircraft to roll until back to the tie down area. Release brake pressure
at tie down area as soon as practicable and park with brake pressure off. 3)
Allow brakes to cool 10-15 minutes. 4) Repeat step 1. There should be a
noticeable increase in holding torque. Repeat steps 1-3 if necessary.
Properly conditioned pads and discs will have a uniform, shiny appearance on
the surface.

Okay thanks everyone. I'll give taxiing with brakes dragging a try. Roger, and everyone else too, what I am doing is breaking the pads in after sandpapering the disks and pads to rejuvenate them.

here is what I use for a brake bleeder. works like a charm. and it is only about $10. I picked it up at Ace Hardware. One of the best things I ever bought. It makes bleeding brakes very easy and fast. It blows out all the air bubbles.

I did the break in this morning. Before I started I held the brakes and increased engine power until the plane started to creep. At 5000 rpm I couldn't hold it. Then I taxied at 5000 RPM holding firm pressure on the brakes to keep speed about 10 mph for about 200 yards. Then I let it roll to a stop without using the brakes. The disks were too hot to touch when I first got out.
After the break in run and letting the brakes cool down I tried a static run up again and was able to easily hold it with full (6200 rpm) engine power.

The trick is not to build up too much heat... You do that basically by clow
taxiing with minimal but consistent brake application. It's well worth
doing.
