FYI,

On Wednesday morning, at two minutes and three seconds
after 1:00 AM, the time and date was: 01:02:03

Yes Lynn,

Math IS fun! It is a language you can play with.

I tried to do my Fox cruise in Mach #'s, but my wiz
wheel doesn't go that low.

Could have done it in "sublight speeds" to impress,
but that requires negative exponents. Still could
sound impressive. You know, something like:

"Yup. She cruises at 3.284 times the speed of light
to the minus 28th power!"

Sounds impressive. Might really be the speed of a
sleeping snail's blood flow, but who's to know? Maybe
we could work it out sometime for real. Then all us
Foxers can add,

"No really, my Fox goes that fast!" when people look
at you with disbelief.

This near to the earth we are so close to suborbital
velocity anyway! Smile In a good wind we can actually
achive Synchronous Orbit! (As in zero ground speed)

Don't you just divide the Challenger speed, say 50 mph (smile) by the speed
of sound at sea level and a standard day,,,,what ever that is, which might
be about .1 mach Bob U.

Bob (aka Rube Mathburg),

Would it be ok to report .80 mach since the prop tip
speed is about that? At least some part of a fox is
near the speed of sound! :-0

Oh, forgot. The exhaust may exceed mach one. That is
why it is so noisy.

Thanks to Rex, the conversion page makes the
Challenger's 50 mph about .066 mach. My S-5 can hit
140 mph or .184 mach! Now that is truckin'!

Michel,

We could go on and on with this one, like how do women
buy shoes, or what size was that fish I caught
yesterday? Or how long does winter last in Norway?

But I got to go to Sun&Fun tomorrow, so I am moving
way past "do not archive" to "do not post" until I am
back. See you all after Shangrala

You guys know how to talk dirty! In Norway, we have
simplified math.
It goes like this: One, two, three, many. Simple,
isn't it? E.g. three
plus one is ... many. Many plus many is ... still
many.

Cheers,
Michel

Hi Michel.
You brought back memories.

When I first arrived in the States, during some discussions, the guys would
mention "shit loads" Like I would ask how many dollars it would take me to buy
a used car? and the answer would be " that would take a shit load" Today with
the rising cost of fuel, if you ask how much it costs to fill the airplane
tanks (well you know the answer)

Maybe that is why no one is really complaining to the government about the
dirty cost of fuel these days, it is real hard to express oneself in shit loads
and be taken seriously!
Now' when in Wales and I talked dirty, that would definitely have a different
meaning and it would be very discreet. If you know what I mean Wink

So behind the facade, In the USA, math is very similar to Norway. It also
goes; One, two, three, shit load (as you say "dirty") and dig deeper, you may
find out that three plus three equals two loads But then again I was never to
good with math!!

Parting note: And when someone told me I was "so full of shit" It made me
happy because I thought I was rich (I just knew I had lots of it, what ever that
was)

Greetings Eric.

Hello Eric and Kurt,

Indeed math is a marvellous thing but I also like to read about the
history of mathematics. Why is the circle divided in 360 degrees? And
the year in 12 months? And the week in 7 days? Why, from our calendar,
was Jesus one year old when he was born? Does the number zero really
exist? Why can't a computer divide a number by zero and how comes the
big bang results in an ever expending universe? What are the true
meanings of the words "never" and "always?" Do they exist or is the
universe one giant loop? ... Oops, sorry guys, I forgot to take my
medicine! ... sorry Nurse, I'm coming now! ... What? The straight
jacket? Noooo, please!!! Smile

Cheers,
Michel

When they get you all calmed down, Michel, try this one on for
size.....I've always had the notion that our universe, instead of going
on forever out into space, came to a stop, and that our universe was
just a big transparent sphere that hung in another larger space, along
with other universes, and that all these universes were watched over by
some guy sitting on a giant stool and he would watch each universe and
see how they did things, and wrote them down on a large clip-board and
perhaps made reports to some other similar "universe watchers".
I just couldn't imagine that the universe went on forever, so this is
what I came up with....then I got busy living life and not worrying
about where the boundaries were. Maybe that's why I built the
Kitfox....so maybe I could fly out to where our transparent sphere ends
and watch the "watchers".....Nurse, I'll have what Michel's having,

Since you are all filling time and space.... consider
this:

Einstein figured that as you approach the speed of
light, time slows down. At the speed of light, time
stops. Therefore a light beam travels its complete
distance, even if all the way across the universe, in
no time, ie, from the light's point of view, it is
everywhere at once.

Kinda' God-like. Or, "Let there be light" wasn't too
far off of being very important to our understanding
of the universe. We should consider more about what
the universe looks like at the speed of light to get a
better understanding in my opinion.

Einstein also figured that the amount of energy needed
to approach the speed of light goes up dramatically
and reaches infinity at light speed. To go faster
would require infinite energy, plus a little more.

The again, my double D flashlight doesn't have that
much of a kick when I turn it on, so there may be some
loopholes in the theory?

There's a theory that some matter can not exist below the speed of light
and a conversion to that type of matter would allow one to move at that
speed effortlessly. :-\

Kurt:

You're right, there is a loophole. The particle that your D cell
instrument launches has zero mass, so it all works out. The
impossibility that was referenced by the great man was when the particle
has non zero mass, or to state it more simply if it has mass, then the
energy required to move it at the speed of light becomes infinite.
Photon has mass zero. Photon, therefore exists in all time and in no
time. So the statement "I am the light of the world" is truly profound.

WOW this is getting heavy. The biggest mystery I had was how to get Poly

According to the guy on the VHS Model Airplane version of How to Cover
with Poly-fiber, you are supposed to sit around the pot-bellied stove
telling lies, and the bigger the lies, the easier the poly-tak is to
remove (paraphrased) : )

Since the list is pretty quiet....

A puzzler: If you take light and shine it thru a half
silvered mirror so that 1/2 the light is passed thru
and the other 1/2 is reflected off in a different
direction,

And you pass each 1/2 of the light thru polorizing
glasses so that only verticle waves pass from one beam
and only horizontal waves pass thru from the other
beam and,

If you then take the verticle waves and optically turn
them horizontal,

The horizontal beam going off in a completely
different direction will immediately turn verticle!

How does it know?

I have no idea, Kurt, but this is very interesting, thanks for sharing.
I guess the answer is that light can't be considered as something like
sound wave, wind or running water. It belongs to another universe where
Newton physics and even relativity doesn't rule. It belongs to quantum
physic, the micro-universe where things are not exactly where they are
and you can't predict their next position. ... and now, it gets too
complicated for my little brain! Smile

Cheers,
Michel
