|
|
Hey guys,
I noticed something a little strange about my Kitfox 5. With the control sticks completely secured, the flaperons have roughly 10 degrees of wiggle room. It appears that the flaperon tubes remain firmly in place, and the flaperons wiggle about these tubes due to a bit of rivet looseness. Is this normal? Thanks!

If you can see loose rivets allowing movement then I would investigate further.
Loose rivets will only get looser and migjht be a early warning sign of something.
BTW -- how much should a model 5 weight empty with a 0240 >?

Carl,
I don't think that amount of looseness is normal. In thinking of the
construction, there should be a steel bulkhead / rib on the inboard end of
the flaperon that the tube is riveted to as well as to the mass balance
weights. The rivets should be Stainless Steel. If the movement is between
the tube and the steel rib it should be addressed. I think what I would do
is drill out the rivets and install larger rivets. There is also a
tendency to develop slop in the linkages as well, but I think 10 degrees is
too much.

Thanks guys.
Lowell, I think you're right on. I'm going to drill the rivets out and pop in some larger ones. I'll tell you how this happened (I think) .. I had the plane parked facing away from the wind on a really gusty day with the control column locked. I think the buffeting loosened up the flaperon rivets, unfortunately. Hard lesson. Will replacing the rivets require any disassembly?

Carl,
I don't think so, unless the rivet tails rattling around in the spar is a
problem to you. I think I'd do one at a time to keep the flaperon in
alignment. I had a situation once where the rivet ends were noisy and I
just injected a small amount of epoxy and they settled down.
