Just got my universal wheel balancer for motorcycle wheels. Tapered cones allow it to work with any wheel up to 1.5" axle.
http://www.marcparnes.com/Universal_Motorcycle_Wheel_Balancer.htm
It's very sensitive. Thumb screws secure the cones, and if both thumb screws are on the same side, the balancer will slowly rotate until they're at the bottom.
I have flights scheduled for Sunday and Monday I'll be doing Murph* for Memorial Day. But by the middle of the week I should have the wheels balanced and can report on how that affects the shimmy after landing.
*Murph: Run a mile, do 100 pullups, 200 pushups, and 300 squats...then run another mile. Last year was just over 57 minutes, this time shooting for sub 50. Google "Memorial Day Murph" if curious.

Bill,
I've gone the "Dyna Beads" route. They are sold by Innovative balancing
www.innovativebalancing.com They are very inexpensive (I mean $3 bucks or so for an ounce) and dynamically balance your tires whenever they are in motion. A friend put them into his tires (tubes) and his shimmy went away. On the lightning tires you would only use an ounce in the nose wheel and 1.5 - 2.0 ounces in the mains.
I'm putting them in one tire at a time to see which tire, if any stops shimmying. Installation was a breeze even with the 90 valve stem.
Right now the nose tire has them in it, but I haven't flown taxied it yet..honey do's more than Murphy. I'll be testtng it out tomorrow and will report results. Then the right main; followed by left main
Their web site does a good job explaining the theory and technical aspects of the ceramic beads. It also lists several good testimonials.
If this works,
Bear

Hey Bear: I wish you better luck than I had. I put the Dyna Beads in my RH tire because it is the one always bouncing. I put about 1 3/4 ounce in the tube, and my bouncing got significantly worse. I have now put a 10 ply Michelin tire on and it is significantly better, but it still tends to bounce at about 20 mph.

Well, within a week, give or take. In my two year experiment with weird infections, I got a tick bite while in Arkansas the day before Memorial Day and it quickly became apparent I had picked something up from the critter. I haven't had as much as a cold in the last year, and suddenly this. Oh well. I'm on antibiotics that kill everything, including my body's attempts to digest food.
I did get back out to the hangar on Friday and got both wheels balanced. I was very happy with the balancer, it proved to be ultra sensitive and the results were repeatable so I felt confident in the balancing done.
In each case, the wheel was light on the side with the valve stem. That seemed strange, but the red dot and the valve stem were on the same side, and for one wheel it took 1.25 ounces on the rim to balance it. The other took 1.5 ounces in the same spot.
I took a couple of short videos, and will hopefully fly tomorrow with wheelpants off. If all is well I'll put the pants back on, fly again, and will report on the results.
I sure hope the shimmy is gone. It's the one thing keeping me from taking passengers right now, because I just don't like explaining it. It's just enough to be unsettling.

Get well soon, Bill,
Hope you have good results with your wheel balancing. If you take at look at the March 2009 Lightning Newsletter you will see a short article in the tech tips section about a racing go kart wheel balancing tool that I used to balance my wheels. I tried that after Linda reported good results having her wheels balanced at a local motorcycle shop. My results were positive, but didn't completely do away with all the shimmy.
I think the shimmy is kind of inherent in the round rod gear leg design, but as we have mentioned before, lots of other factors can also help or hinder - tires (pressures and compounds), toe in/out, aircraft weight, and runway surface. Seem to be lots of variables, but we look forward to your findings.
Blue Skies,
Buz

I couldn't sleep last night, so went flying. When I took off I could tell the takeoff roll was MUCH smoother. I had high hopes. I landed and was surprised again at how smooth it felt. No, not my landing, but the airplane when it was on the mains.
Unfortunately, as I slowed to about 20 mph or so, the shimmy was still there. Nick once said there was a specific wood piece to purchase from Home Depot, I believe. If he'll chime in that will be my next step.
The shimmy now seems worse, but only by contrast. TKI has a fairly new runway and the plane is incredibly smooth on rollout right up until the shimmy, then it really shakes from about 20-15 mph. I want it fixed even more now that it feels so good the rest of the time.
There was a 172 in the pattern with me (at midnight!) so I spent the rest of the flight playing "catch the 172, then extend my downwind." Sure, I could have flown slower than he did, but the plane is too much fun, especially on a glassy smooth crystal clear night.
The HID light works well, but I wish I had put one in each wing now.
Nick, any suggestions on that wood strip to change the resonant frequency of the gear?
