Just a data point. Today an SL30 received ZUN VOR at 80 NM SW at 11500 MSL. terrain in the area was 5000-7000. Also operaton of the Planelights HID system did not affect the reception. Also takeoff and landing at 8000 densitly altitude required only about 1500 feet ground roll. landing was aided by slight NE wind and up hill grade .3%. GRT sport calculated max power at takeoff to be 73%; achieved 23.5"MP (at)2700.

How much distance do you have between the nav antenna (say, at the terminals) and the bulb? And between the terminals and the HID power supply? Maybe mine are just a little too close. Are you using a wig-wag?
Isn't it a great mountain plane?

not using wig wag; If I recall the distances are about 6-8 inches. antenna is about mid tip while HID transformer and light assembly are forward tip. I observed no interference with the landing lights coming on but wig wag may be different in that the HID may be restarting at every WIG. I don't know.
Given that there are few data points; every mountain airstrip is a planning/guessing game. I looked at the book for a Piper Dakota with derated O540. It is nice to be able to fly in the mountains without the turbo. I had a turbo C177RG for many years and the turbo allowed almost any operation in the mountains but there was always the question of the extra heat and high oil temps. With the big engine, oil temp is of little concern. My oil cooler is the standard one from the firewall forward kit. I have drilled off the triangular piece air dams fom the front cylinders.
After breakin my CHTs usually stay below 360; they were mostly between 360 and 420 during breakin. I now run LOP between 9-13 usually and burn about 9 gph and true 150 KTAS. CHTs spread about 40 degrees with the average just above 300F. EGTs have about a 50F spread and average about 1400F.
Yes having a "muscle airplane" is fun.
