Hi Folks,
I have my Rotax 582 running fairly smoothly at this point. I have an oil leak though. There is a black, tarry like substance on the exhaust side of the engine which appears to be coming from the casing somewhere, maybe between the cylinders. Does anyone have an idea of what this is and where it could be coming from. The engine is new but was upgraded in 2003 by a rotax dealer. The previous owner said it had preservative oil on the internal parts. Could this be some kind of preservative leaking.
Cheers
Ken

Sounds like a leaking exhaust manifold to me. I've seen the same thing on my 582 when I had one. Engine was also running rich at the time. Take care, Jim Chuk Avids, kitfox 4 (building) Mn

Thanks Jim, right on both points. I was running a bit rich for break. I tightened the exhaust manifold bolts. They were surprisingly loose. I degreased the engine and ran it up for 1/2 hour at 5000 rpm. No leak.
Cheers
