I'm being told that you can get genuine Rotax engine parts (e.g. pistons - with the same part numbers as in CPS, LEAF or Lockwood catalogs) from Ski Doo dealers - at a significant savings.
Anyone know whether this is true or not? They probably won't sell to someone who says they're for aircraft use. But I'd like to know if anyone knows if Ski Doo uses the same parts we use.

I only tried once to buy a part from a SkiDoo dealer. I told him the part number (which I got from a CPS catalog) and the service guy asked me what kind of ultralight I fly.
Turns out the snowmobiles use their own part number, and not the Rotax number. The CPS catalogs use the Rotax number. Easily cross referenced and recognized by the service guy.
All I needed was a cooling fan belt, and he sold it to me anyway.

Hi Arty,
There could easily be some subtle differences and I'm sure part numbers are different. Use a part from another application may prove disastrous and more expensive in the long run if it is different. I don't think this one is worth the risk.

Hi Arty, back when I was using a 532, there were occasions when I needed something simple, like the seal that runs around the head to cylinder joint, cylinder base gaskets, o-rings, stuff like that and I would get them at the local Seadoo dealer. Couldn't tell any difference between them and the parts I was replacing.
If I could look up the part number online, I could see that for some parts, the aircraft engine part and the Seadoo/Skidoo part was the same except that the aircraft version had an extra prefix. If it was something simple like a gasket or o-ring, I would get it locally for much less and never had a problem. Would not consider doing that for anything like wrist pins or pistons, but the boat/sled prices are sure a lot better.
For the 582, it has been all "approved" parts. But then, I haven't had to work on it much, just check the rings at each annual, verify that they are still free, look at the underside of the head and verify that there is no carbon, and button it back up. (Love that Phillips Injex!)
